Do you have an warranty on your laptop? If so, I'd recommend you get it RMA'ed. Most likely, your keyboard ribbon cable internally is loose or your keyboard is faulty altogether, so if you carry the expertise, I'd suggest you open up your laptop and reseat it. If that doesn't work, you'd have to replace the whole assembly.

1 it is not under warranty as I had a ram upgrade a while back and could not do that without the warranty being voided

2 it is still a new laptop even without the warranty

3 I would get my arse kicked if I touched it as it was bought under finance using a relatives name cos I could not get it on finance as I did try and zip so it went under their name in the finance department so it is only I think 2 year old

@matt99712 wdym by upgrading the ram voids the warranty? in the USA im pretty sure thats illegal for manufacturers to do regardless, however, if you're outside the US, it may or may not apply.

@nosc0ped360 here in the uk we wait till the warranty to expire before touching any tech whether it be laptops or game consoles as this voids the warranty repairs and I wanted a ram upgrade done on me hp envy x360 laptop so me in law who does tech repairs and builds did the ram upgrade but advised/suggested i wait till the warranty ran out which was only a year so that was what happened and I now have 20gbs of ram space

@matt99712 oh, that makes sense. I'd say safest option would be to go to your in law who did the ram upgrade in the first place and ask he/she to open it up and try reseating the cable. thats the easiest and only free solution from here. also, what keys dont work? does it go on and off, some specific keys dont work, or what happens? also, if your using the laptop without moving it much or at all, cheapest and safest solution would be to buy an external keyboard to use with it.

@nosc0ped360 actually it is not free as me in-law is unable to keep doing it for 0 but ifixit has given me a solution to resolve it without disassembly

Well you can try the following:

  • Stop Windows from “sleeping” the keyboard
  • Reinstall touchscreen & keyboard drivers
  • Disable “Fast Startup”
  • Update from HP’s site, NOT Windows Update

and how do i do any of that

this by far wont do anything. no keyboards cease function because of "driver issues".

@nosc0ped360 and how do i resolve the driver issue

@matt99712 the keyboard almost never fails due to software unless you have that one generation of dell alienwares', but you can open device manager, click on "keyboards," right click the item in the dropdown list, select brwose my comp for drivers, then "let me pick from a list, and then hit next, and it should reinstall the driver.

@nosc0ped360 uh never done it before so

This usually happens due to a faulty or conflicting keyboard/touchpad driver, or a hardware issue where pressure on the palm rest interrupts input. On some HP touch laptops, outdated BIOS, power-saving settings, or touch screen drivers can cause the keyboard to temporarily stop responding. Try updating drivers directly from HP’s support site, not Windows Update. Disable tablet mode and any touch-related utilities, then test with an external keyboard. If the issue continues, it may indicate a failing internal keyboard ribbon or touch digitizer causing input conflicts.
