Stuck on connect to power screen. How do I fix?

Hello

I have an ipod photo. I just restored it. Upon completion it went to the "connect to external power screen" like it should. I assumed plugging it into a wall charger would clear this. My cheap wall charger (from china on ebay) did not work I have read that only original apple brand chargers work. I do not have one of these. I have tried plugging it into:

Powered usb hub

Firewire 400 port

Many cheap wall chargers

USB backup battery

I soldered the 5v line from an old PSU onto a usb female adapter and plugged that in. Also tried the 12v line from the psu on the fire wire power pins. I am out of ideas.

Anything else I can use to provide external power and get past this screen
