Short Battery Life
My laptop dies very quick while not on the charger or even loses power with the charger connected.
Too many tabs open
Having too many tabs or functions open at once will force the computer to run things in the background, which will use more battery than necessary.
Utilizing too much CPU
Playing a game, watching a video, or downloading/uploading content for an extended period of time, will drain your battery much more quickly than if the computer were idle. Also, if you encounter malware it may affect CPU use and thus consume more battery life.
Defective Model
Windows may be reporting an incorrect battery life percentage remaining. If so, then go into the device manager and delete all of the content under the Battery section. Then, reboot it and see if the battery life has changed
If this doesn’t work then you can try to search “powercfg.exe/batteryreport” within the computer files to get a command shell. The report will have some important fields to look at like design capacity and full charge capacity which can tell you what state your battery is in.
The battery itself could just be defective and need replacing, or the operating system could be defective and require more battery to run.
Frozen or unresponsive screen
My screen remains the same for long periods of time and I am not able to interact with it using the keyboard, mouse or trackpad.
Unresponsive application
Often times computers freeze due to an unresponsive application. This means that one of the applications that your computer is running is for some reason blocked on a problem, taking up a large portion of your computers processing power, resulting in a freeze. To test if you have an unresponsive application press Ctrl - Alt - Delete, navigate to Task Manager, and see if any software is taking up a large percentage of the CPU’s power.
Malware
Malware is another factor that could result in a freeze. Malware is any software or firmware that is designed to harm you or your computer (i.e. stealing information, hijacking functions, etc.). Malware can negatively affect the firmware of your computer causing freezing and other negative effects. To test if you have malware, download an anti-malware software (such as Malwarebytes) and run a scan of your computer.
Overheating
Overheating of your computer can cause the processor to slow. If hot enough it can cause freezing. Read more on overhearing in the overheating section of the troubleshooting guide.
Outdated video driver
Sometimes video drivers can be outdated or not performing properly, this can cause your computer to freeze or to black out entirely. A potential fix would be to restart the graphics driver. To do this press: Windows button+ ctrl + shift + b. The screen may go black for a second but will return.
Keyboard is not typing
The keys on my keyboard do not type when pressed.
Missing keyboard driver
When updating the computer’s operating system, the keyboard driver may have been deleted. To see if the keyboard driver is installed go to Device Manager. Once in Device Manager check to see if the computer is registering a keyboard. It can be fixed by redownloading the keyboard driver which will allow the computer’s operating system to detect the keyboard again. If the computer cannot detect the keyboard, there may be a hardware issue with the keyboard or motherboard.
Necessary keyboard update
An outdated keyboard driver can cause the keyboard to not work. When drivers are not updated, the computer’s operating system to work may not detect the keyboard. To see if the driver is updated go to Device Manager and click on the tab Keyboard. The keyboard driver can be updated manually or automatically. If it can not be updated, the hardware may be faulty and should be replaced.
Missing keys
If there are missing or broken keys, then replace the individual keys. If the new keys still do not respond, replace the entire keyboard.
Cursor isn’t following
I want to navigate my screen using the cursor, but it will not move or moves only slightly.
Trackpad/Mouse Surface is Dirty
If the trackpad is used often, dirt and residue can build upon its surface. Use a damp (not wet) microfiber cloth and clean the surface thoroughly. If instead, you are using a mouse connected through USB or Bluetooth to ensure that the surface you are using is clean. You may also want to consider using a mouse pad.
Broken/Faulty USB Port or Mouse
Check the right and left sides of the computer to ensure the USB ports are clear of any black residue (evidence of corrosion) or that there is no damage to the ports including bent or missing parts. If instead you are connected to Bluetooth ensure that the wireless connection is established. If the connection displays as established and the cursor still does not move there may be an issue with the mouse itself.
Mouse Sensitivity is Low
The sensitivity of the cursor can be changed in the settings menu. If you are on the Windows 10 operating system this can be changed easily. Go to Settings>Devices>Mouse. Under Related Settings click “Additional mouse options”. In the new window click on “Pointer Options.” In the “Motion” box use the slider to adjust the speed of the cursor.
Overheating
My computer becomes very hot to the touch and may even stop working for a while during use.
Fan malfunction
If the fan cannot be heard running, then the fan may be clogged with dust. Open the back panel to inspect the fan. If it is clogged with dust, use compressed air or q-tips to remove excess dust. If the fan is clean and does not run, it may need to be replaced. To learn how to open the back panel and access the fan, click here.
Overuse
Using the computer for extended periods of time causes the computer to heat up. Shutting down the computer temporarily will allow the computer to cool. Decreasing the usage by closing unused tabs or power off when not in use may keep the computer from becoming too warm which can cause damage to hardware.
Routine check
Check the vents on the sides and underside for any dust that may have accumulated. Dust disrupts the airflow from the fan inside the computer to keep it cool. If the vents are clogged with dust, use compressed air to blow the dust out of the vents or use q-tips. This can be done without taking apart the computer. If the computer continues to overheat, take apart the computer to clean excess dust that has accumulated inside.
