The laptop does not respond when the power button is pressed.
Chromebook Not Charging
First rule out problems with the charger with the following steps:
- Step 1: Make sure the Chromebook is charging by checking the LED light by the charging port.
- Step 2: Leave the Chromebook charging for 3.5 hours.
- Step 3: If the Chromebook still does not turn on, try using a different charger.
If Chromebook is still not turning on there may be a problem with the charging port or the internal battery.
Tip: If there is dust or build up in the charging port, consider using an air duster to gently remove any loose debris.
Chromebook Needs to be Restarted
The Chromebook may need to be restarted.
First try doing a quick restart by holding down the power button.
If this does not work, you may need to perform a hard restart. This is done by holding down the refresh button and the power button at the same time. Note: a hard restart clears the Chromebook’s RAM or any cache that may be interfering with the boot process.
USB Devices Interfering With the Booting Up Process
Sometimes external devices can interfere with the Chromebook's booting up process. If you have any USB devices connected to your laptop, disconnect those devices, and try to start up your Chromebook.
Tip: Restarting the laptop at this step may help.
Apps Causing Chromebook to Crash
If your laptop turns on but crashes or the screen is not responding, remove any unnecessary apps or recently installed apps. Additionally, delete any extra user accounts that are not being used.
Bad Battery
The internal battery of the Chromebook may be faulty or disconnected. Open the Chromebook and make sure the battery is connected properly. If the Chromebook still does not respond to the power button, the battery may need to be replaced. Follow this guide.
Note: Make sure the laptop is powered off before opening it.
Fast Draining Battery
If you notice that your laptop battery is running out of power faster than usual, it may be fast draining. You may notice slow performance or unexpected shutdowns.
Screen brightness
Higher screen brightness requires more power. A device’s display is one of the major components that consume battery. In order to avoid draining your battery, lower the screen brightness.
Tips: Adjusting the screen brightness on your laptop can help to conserve battery life and reduce eye strain
To lower screen brightness, follow these steps:
- Steps 1: Use the keyboard shortcuts. Press the "Fn" key and the brightness key together to increase or decrease the screen brightness.
- Step 2: In case the first step does not work, use the Windows settings. You can also adjust the screen brightness through the Windows settings. Go to "Settings" and click on "System" then "Display".
Battery age
Laptop batteries can lose their ability to hold a charge, which can cause them to drain faster. In that case, consider replacing it with a new one by using this guide.
Tips: Use your laptop regularly. In fact, batteries degrade faster when they are left unused for long periods. If you plan to store your laptop for an extended period, discharge the battery to around 50% and then turn off the laptop.
Running hardware-intensive tasks
Some activities such as gaming, video editing or rendering, or using CPU/GPU-intensive applications consume a lot of power and quickly discharge your battery. To avoid that, close unnecessary programs and set your laptop to low-performance mode. Use the guide.
Tips: Use an external power source: If possible, connect your laptop to an external power source when running hardware-intensive tasks. This can help to ensure that your laptop has enough power to complete the task without draining the battery.
Malware or viruses
If your laptop has been infected with viruses, it can cause the system to consume more power. You will notice your laptop being slow and if your laptop’s battery is draining too fast, chances are that your laptop has been infected. Updating your operating system and software, or installing anti-virus software may help you get rid of this issue. Note: Some viruses and malwares are dangerous and highly difficult to remove. A professional may be needed to remove a complex virus/malware safely.
Tips: Use a firewall, be cautious when downloading files, and do not click on suspicious links.
Overheating
Your laptop overheats while you are using it. You may notice its hot to the touch, has performance issues or unexpected shutdowns.
Overloading
Sometimes, software or process running in the background of your laptop can cause it to overheat. Lower the screen resolution and decrease graphics settings. Check and close any unnecessary windows and applications.
Insufficient thermal paste
If you have owned your laptop for over two to three years and it is heating up significantly without running intensive tasks, its possible your thermal paste has dried out. Click here to see how to reapply your thermal paste.
Malfunctioning motherboard
Unlike other computers that have vented or liquid cooling systems, some Chromebooks do not have fans or liquid based cooling hardware, rather it has a natural cooling system within the motherboard. If your laptop is still overheating even after reapplying thermal paste, its possible your motherboard is damaged, and needs to be replaced. To see how to replace your motherboard, follow this guide.
Silent or unusual audio
Audio appears to be absent or appears static, muted, or "broken" sounding
Connected to an audio Bluetooth device
If your audio seems absent when you are using your device, make sure that you are not connected to any Bluetooth devices that may be receiving the audio you are not hearing.
Dirty speakers
If your audio sounds oddly quiet or muffled sounding, you may have debris in your speakers. Here's how you can clean out your speakers without opening the laptop.
- Step 1: Take a pointed object and loosen up any debris in your speakers without pushing any debris into the interior of the computer.
- Step 2: Take a vacuum or air compressor to your speakers and suck/blow out any debris
- Step 3: Use a Q-tip and submerge the cotton tips in isopropyl alcohol and clean the speaker holes of any debris that may have been left behind.
Waterlog
If your devices audio sounds "gurgly" or has an odd prominent static effect, its possible your laptop has come in contact with water close to the speakers and has been waterlogged. This normally isn't too harmful if it was a little bit of water, so just wait a little while for the water to dry and it should resolve in a few hours. Your speakers getting submerged or coming in contact with a lot of water could mean permanent damage and replacement would be needed. Click here to see how to replace your speakers.
Speaker popping
If your audio rattles or seems to be skipping and you tend to play a lot of audio that is stressful on your speakers (I.e.: soprano, tenor, or bass intense) or, if you play audios at high volumes consistently, you may have popped your speakers and they may need replacing. Follow this guide to see how to replace your speakers.
Vertical Lines on Screen
Laptop has colorful vertical and or horizontal lines on screen that block your view of what is on screen.
Debris lodged in screen panel
If your laptop goes through a lot of dust and dirt in your environment, make sure that the interior of your screen paneling is clean and free of debris. Buildup of debris over time can cause display issues such as dead pixels or vertical lines on screens due to debris exerting pressure onto the LCD. To see how to clean your screens border panel, follow these steps:
Step 1: Submerge the cotton part of a Q-tip into isopropyl alcohol. Get rid of excess alcohol by lightly scraping the Q-tip against a clean blunt surface.
Step 2: Take your Q-tip with alcohol and apply gentle pressure to the screens border panel and begin to wipe. Make sure not to press too hard or you can further damage your screen.
Step 3: If there is large chunks of solid debris, take a needle like tool and gently scrape the debris out of the panel without scraping away any glue.
Outdated display driver
Its possible that your display driver is out of date and is causing display errors. To see how to update your drivers on your laptop, click here.
Malfunctioning hardware
Old or faulty graphics cards, defective T-con boards, and ribbon cable malfunctions can all cause this display error. To find out if your hardware is causing the problem, access your BIOS system while the laptop starts up. If the vertical lines remain while in the BIOS menu, then the problem is hardware related. Note: Make sure you put the correct replacement hardware into your laptop. Incorrect hardware pieces can damage or destroy your laptop.
Human error
If you have dropped, crushed, inflicted water damage or any other physical harm onto your laptop, especially the screen, you may have damaged or destroyed your screen as well as your LCD and need it replaced. To see how to replace your laptops screen and LCD, follow this guide.
