I prefer the 7200 rpm Western Digital Scorpio Black 320 GB. I use 2-3 a week for my customers and have never had a problem with one of them.

There used to be a problem with heat generation with the faster drives, back in the dreaded iBook days. No issue here anymore?

I haven't seen heat problems with hard drives in years.

+ There should be no heat problems. Depending on your energy saver settings you may see less battery life. On the plus you will have a faster machine.

I installed a 7200 rpm WD Scorpio Black 320GB hard drive into my MBP13 in January 2010. I have had no problems whatsoever with this upgrade. There has been a bit more heat evolved, but the aluminum unibody dissipates heat very effectively. No noted changes in noise, vibration, power consumption.

Update (05/02/2010)

Installed a Crucial 500GB SSD in my MBP13. They are much cheaper than when I put in the Scorpio. Additionally, much cooler, faster, longer battery life. YMMV.

I can also recommend the 7200 rpm WD Scorpio Black 320GB hard drive. Got one that I installed two years ago and no problem with it.

Yup, keep in mind that battery life may go down.

I also used a WD Scorpio in the same set up. It was a little quicker, but I keep my MBP on my night stand and the noise was a little intrusive. It got a little warm and power hungry and I am buy no means someone who stresses their computer. My only excuse for upgrades is curiosity. Yes, put a 256 Crucial SSD in, but couldn't bear the waste. I settled on an 80.

My suggestion, MCE Optibay, 60-80 GB for OS and apps. A nice power friendly 500-1000 for your less intensive apps and media.

Apple is becoming Microsoft I'm afraid. And I,ve been evangelising for 10 years, and I'm starting to feel less is more.

I,m bound to itunes, but Chromium and Splash....? are my next points of interest.

I also have an MacBook Pro 13" mid 2009, and I've just put in a WD 7200 rpm 750GB and I'm having trouble installing. Is 750GB to big??
