I have a old 3rd gen iPod. The battery is most likely dead and it won't turn on even if I have it plugged in via USB cable. Is it still worth trying to replace the battery?

Dmitry Podkuiko, absolutely. those are great iPods and I like the sound a lot better than the one from my Touch. Anyhow, follow this guide to change the battery and I would also suggest to get a Firewire charger. The iPod 3rd Gen does not charge through USB but needs Firewire connection. This model only syncs through USB. Hope this helps, good luck.

Thank You, This was very helpful, Even if you plug in the Ipod 3rd Gen via USB it will show a 0.1 volt drop but will not charge the device. The only method to charge is Firewire ! Thanks Again!!!

I have used an iPod 3G Model A1040) since it was new on a variety of charging docks (not Firewire) with no issues at all.

i have a iPod 15gb model A1040 and it is not charging at all could it be the battery That why its not charging? Are what could be the problem that its not charging?

Are you using the proper charger? Gen 3 iPod only charges from a firewire cable. It will sync with usb but not charge.
Hello,
I’ve not test replaced battery but charging it with FireWire. When completed I connect to pc via usb - 30 pin.
When syncing the battery charge drops completely and syncing stops.
Is this an battery issue?
