Backlight circuit troubleshooting needed. The cheap screens have an exposed backlight solder joint on the flex. Closing up the phone can short the backlight circuit to ground. It blows a backlight filter/fuse and this is usually the extent of it. REPAIRABLE--find the dead filter and replace it. The backlight circuit is pretty straightforward. Feel free to contact me if you need a mail-in board level repair like this to get your screen replacement back on track.

That's why I stock my own screens, although they cost me more than what the local resellers would sell me theirs by the piece...

Are the LCD units you are using apple original or 3rd party replacements? as if they are replacements, they may not be good quality replacements. i'm assuming you've ensured the display settings are set to full brightness as well...

All screens are third party replacements--Apple does not allow original screens to be available as replacement parts

Slightly delayed reply, sorry jessabethany. i've not been on in a while. But that isn't true. The screens are available, just not as readily available as replacements.

You can get high-quality replacement screens not made by Apple. The Apple marketing and hype machine is second to none! Gorilla glass and many other high quality parts are available outside of OEM.

You can also get original screens. Apple offer repairs for cracked iPhone digitizers, so there are plenty being manufactured. You just need to know where to go. Because there are so many high quality replacements available on the market, its hard to weed through to get the original ones, but they are available, because thats all we source.

This "MAYBE" a software issue and it's sort of a filter over your screen that won't permit full brightness, usually after installing iOS updates.

Here's how to fix it.

Go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Zoom > and DISABLE Zoom. Brightness returns.

Uh-Oh. Sounds like the cheap aftermarket screens might damage something in the iPhone circuitry. I have the same issue - put on a new 'cheap' screen and the phone worked really great for about 2 weeks. All of the sudden today, I have almost no brightness, and no response to brightness slider controls. I suppose it is possible that the new screen (back-light) has actually burned out the driver in whichever chip is responsible for back-light control, which may be a fatal failure. The phone is not very usable as is, except in pitch darkness.

I did just update to iOS 7.0.6 yesterday, don't suppose that could have anything to do with it???

I have researched this problem and found that it does indeed indicate that some hardware components may be bad. The following solution seems to be effective in most cases, but it requires very fine soldering skills:

http://www.cyberdocllc.us/shop/iphone-5-...

They sell the components mentioned as a kit on their website which consists of the coil, an 'IC' (really this is just a diode), and 3 'filters' (capacitors). They have an excruciatingly detailed video showing how to change these parts, but the right soldering equipment is essential. They also list this kit on Ebay - search for "iPhone 5 backlight coil".

What they do not discuss is the actual backlight IC, which is an LM3534TMX backlight controller from Texas Instruments. I am looking for a source for these in low quantities, but I suspect most problems can be solved without changing that chip.

I hope this helps all of you suffering from this problem (and me too)! I'll let you know the outcome for me once I get the parts.

Ah-Ha. Here is a link for the backlight controller integrated circuit:

Please vote 1 for me if this helps you!

No!!!!! This is going to be a simple backlight filter. The cheap screens blow this filter all the time. DONT mess with the backlight ic chip (not the diode or coil either)

The issue may simply be caused by the light sensor. You can diagnose this by comparing the brightness of the Apple logo screen at startup and the lock screen.

If the Apple logo screen has a normal brightness compared to a dim lock screen then the issue is the light sensor.

To fix you simply need to remove and correctly seat the camera, speaker, and light sensor.

The thing is this doesnt just happen with cheap non apple screens. I had a customer who also experienced this after the front screen was replaced by apple for a earpiece issue. Was not able to get the brightness up, and the customer was not happy about having to go back to apple.
