backlight comes on, but goes off after a while.

Did you ever sort this out?

I have a White MacBook with the same problem. backlight comes on, but goes off after a while. It is not a mechanical problem. Moving the lid makes no difference and wiggling the cable on the inside makes no difference. Interestingly turning the machine off and back on restores the backlight (for a while).

Originally one wire in the inverter cable was broken (it got caught in the hinge). I fixed the wire but now I have this issue. Any suggestions?

How did you fix the wire? What are the last three digits of your computer?

Sounds to me like your inverter is failing or the inverter wires are failing when heated. To test it hook it up to an external monitor and see if the monitor goes off when the screen does. If both fail at the same time it would be a GPU failure. It the monitor remains on, you will have isolated the issue to the inverter or inverter cables.
