I have been having problems with the camera lately, with the image on the screen being bright red and blue. Now the camera shutter does not open when activating either camera app. Anybody have an idea?

Strange....
The first place to start would be a software restore (be sure to back up your data first).
After that, I would say try replacing the camera.
If this does not solve the problem, all signs point to logic board.

Yeah, sounds like a software problem. These phones don't have a physical shutter.
2 iphones with broken cameras following water damage both displayed only the closed shutter. no prob with software in these instances.

I'm assuming that the software opens the "shutter" when it successfully activates the camera. If the camera won't initialize, then the shutter doesn't open. I'd say the camera is the most likely culprit, not the software. Good call.

I once had the problem. Power Cycled, rebooted, no help.
libmobiledevice restore helped me.
Then replace camera if lmd does not help
