Any tips for a water damaged laptop?

Unfortunately, my little cousin spilled almost half a cup of water on my laptop. I sprang into action and dried it off with a towel and shook out most of the water. Also, I had a protector for the keyboard. The water mostly leaked in from the gap between the screen and the keyboards. The laptop kept on restarting. At one point, it actually let me log in seconds before it shut down.

I kept in encased in rice for close to 36 hours. When I tried to plug in the charger, no light turned on.

I'm waiting for the screwdriver set to arrive so I can inspect it more closely and/or to clean out any corrosion.

Are there any tips that you all can give me, or similar happy stories?

What are the last four numbers of your laptop's serial number? You will want to get a bottle of 90%+ Isopropyl alcohol if you do not have one in your house. Once your tools arrive and we have your serial number we can walk you through the cleaning process.

I was unable to find my box with the serial number located. (However,I know the laptop is a mid-2013). I have bought all of the other materials.

One thing I noticed after I opened the cover is that there is a bit of residue on the battery. Should I clean that part off? I've already disconnected the battery from the mother board.

If I do clean it, should it be with the 91% isopropyl alcohol? Or with a cloth and water?

Use IPA exclusively. Water contains minerals and is conductive = may leave residue, cause short.

Thank you for the help!

Never use rice. Rice mixed with liquid leaves nasty $@$* residue on the board which is even worse than the corrosion you are trying to prevent.

Take board out and use toothbrush, a $1 baking tray from corner store deli, and 99% alcohol from the pharmacy. 91% will do if they don't have 99%. Brush GENTLY in circles. GENTLY.

Then put it in an oven at 220f for a few hours.

THIS

IS

NOT

TO

REFLOW

SOLDER!!!!!

That is a BS myth and fixes nothing. We are just trying to remove all remaining remnants of water. Alcohol displaces water and is a good cleaning agent, so immersing the board in alcohol to do the brush cleaning is important.

After the cleaning, into the oven for a few hours. Preferably an oven you never plan on cooking in again. Then try to turn it on after letting it cool off for fifteen minutes or so.
