Replacing failing hard drive

The hard drive in my mid 2011 27",iMac is failing. My question is the following: I fixit sales install kits for adding an additional drive --SSD or otherwise. Is it reccomended that you keep the old failing drive installed after installing the replacement/additional drive? I ask because, I have not seen a kit for solely replacing the drive, only for adding another.

Here's the guide for replacing the drive: iMac Intel 27" EMC 2429 Hard Drive Replacement

If you have another Mac, put this machine into Target Mode and see if it can be repaired using Disk Utilities, and transfer your files if they can be accessed till the new drive is installed. If not let us know as the new drive will need to be formatted and a system installed, then using either an external enclosure or a Universal adapter such as this: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20T...

transfer your data if it is accessible.

You don't need a kit for replacing the drive, all the hardware is already in place though you will have to move all your data to the new one. I would not recommend keeping a failing drive in your system.

A failing drive may trigger the HDD fan because it may warm up, and the result would be pushing your HDD fan to its max rotation (around 6000 rpm) and this may not be a pleasant experience, therefore it is advised to remove or replace that drive.
