Why is my screen white, but external monitor shows desktop

My macbook seems to load up normally with an external display plugged in, but the internal display shows white with nothing else. I can make the backlight brighter or darker, but no graphics appear, the external monitor shows a working desktop. I replaced the display cable inside the macbook and get the same results.
