When plugged in my ipad is showing battery icon with 4 red vertical stripes and then goes to show apple logo, then blank, nothing. If the power cord is removed the device is not responding. please help

If it has never been opened, then you may have damage from non-Apple charger usage on the tristar (U2) chip. This is pretty difficult to repair due to positioning of the chip and heavy underfill. Rule out physical damage to the charge port itself. It is unlikely to be the actual battery.

Its been working fine for almost 2 years. I have always used the genuine apple charger which came in the box.
@jessabethany could damage to this chip cause the ipad to only charge to 1%?
iPad Air charging problems are turning out to be more complex than the other U2 chip based lightning charger devices. They are starting to fail all over the place. U2 replacement has not been solving many of them. My guess right now is that the problem is a failure of the PMIC to transfer charging from charging while off to charging while the device is on.
You can try to put the device into DFU mode, then monitor charging with a usb amp meter. It may charge past 1% while in DFU mode and then you can try restore.
