Having problems with keyboard & trackpad

I have been struggling with the same problem for several days. I would be very cautious about removing that trackpad -- from what I have ascertained in the past two days of research is that this is likely not a physical/hardware problem but rather a system software problem. It is far more common than I realized before my machine was stricken. You've probably seen this page: https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/Tag/track... already. I'll write back in if I can make any headway.

Here's a link to one of those discussions. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203632

@Sara - Haven't seen software issues with the trackpad repairs I've done. Most of the time the pads plastic cover wear out from use. As to the click plate thats when I've seen swollen battery being the cause (can't click). The newer models with glass plates are much better. But even still spilled drinks do a number on either.

@Dan - The only reason I mentioned this is that on the Apple support site (& elsewhere), I have found lots of discussion of software-related trackpad issues. I've tried most of what was suggested and none of it has worked at all - and I bow to your superior expertise in this matter! The thing that struck me was that the problem I have came on so suddenly, right after an upgrade (a beta, no less). The mouse seems to work fine - but the trackpad is totally dysfunctional.

OK, I see the confusion here. You're intermixing MacBook with MacBook Pro and specifically a Retina model which is still different than the older models of MacBook Pro's. Try focusing on what James has a 'MacBook' I don't think you'll find any software issues here. Even if you find something do be careful of the source, I'm always surprised some of the urban legends that have propagated as fact when they are clearly fiction or incomplete truths ;-}

I was indeed conflating the two machines. I'll look for a more suitable thread so I can post the info I have collected there.

Just to close the loop, I can tell it is a software problem because I watch it happening when I turn on verbose logging. I can't fix it myself because the files I would have to edit or replace have been locked by Apple.

I filed a bug report in at the Developer support forum in August 2015. At the beginning of December, I got my first response: Would I please do a sysdiagnose and attach the report to my response? So I did. Then they wrote me and asked me to do it again with the backup volume attached. So I did that.

I have yet to get any real help from Apple, and the trackpad problem persists. There is a Firmware update designed for this specific machine and this specific problem, but when I try to install it, I get an error message and am unable to complete the process. I have tried a variety of alternate trackpad-equivalents, to no avail.

Very frustrating.
