Like you, I did not want a retina model, for many of the reasons you cite. I did a vast amount of research on the very same question. Based on that research, I recently bought a mid-2012 15" Macbook Pro, Quad Core. I can tell you for a fact that it can be upgraded, because I did so. First, I upgraded the RAM to 16 GB, then I upgraded the memory to 1 TB. I bought it used by in "A" condition from iMacket, LLC. Shipping was free. They will do a lot of the customization for you, if that's what you want, and they do not charge for labor. I've been very, very pleased with my new machine. Hope this helps! Sara

Part of my answer to this question, unfortunately, is "next time you buy a dishwasher, don't buy this one!" I have now repaired mine about 4 times -- cleaned out everything, including the grinder, the filter, the spray arm, etc. I even bought & installed a replacement grinder (for $11.... not bad; you can buy them at places like Home Depot, Amazon, etc.). To unclog any obstructions I couldn't see, I poured in boiling water, vinegar and baking soda, as well as dishwasher cleaner from the local hardware store before running the cleaned machine. Everything worked - temporarily. The fact is that this machine is not very well made. The plastic parts are light (in part, I assume, because it takes less energy to move them), but they are not durable. Also, newer dishwashers that are 'eco-friendly' save on energy by using less-hot water. Unfortunately, most powder dish detergents do not dissolve as well in cooler water as in hot water, so you get lots of caked-on detergent (in addition to the food and other gunk)...

I researched this question pretty carefully. Here's what I learned: (1) The problem is extremely common in BMW 3 series cars (esp. 325 and 325xi). It is especially common with rear windows on 4-door sedans. (2) It is caused, most of the time, by a part called a "window regulator." There is one inside each door, and most of the time, it has to be replaced. (3) The part itself is not so expensive, but because the door has to be taken apart, the labor cost is high. I had to get this done here in Philly, mainly because I know the limits of my competence and I'm not quite ready to risk wrecking my own car while trying to fix it. All in all, it cost over $300 - and that was for one window. (4) Incidentally, the problem is most common in BMW 3 series cars, 2001-2006, with average mileage of 101,745 miles (range is 9,000 to 280,000 mi.). One suggestion: although, in theory, a person should be able to reassemble the machine by proceeding backwards through these directions, in fact it is pretty difficult. A guide (to any complex repair) that also covered d the re-assembly process would truly be a wonderful thing.
