HDD to SSD Upgrade (Currently no Fusion Drive, HDD to M.2+SSD?)

Hello,

I have an iMac 27" Late 2013 (EMC 2639) with a 1TB HDD. It does not have a Fusion drive.

My understanding is that all iMacs of this type can take a M.2 SSD and also has a standard SATA port.

Are M.2 SSDs that are available now all compatible or is it still the case that the iMac requires a special M.2 SSD?

Also, if I was to install a M.2 SSD and a standard 2.5" SSD will it see it as two drives or will I have to make it create a "Fusion" drive? I assume that I also need to purchase the thermal sensor as well?

Thanks!

Frank

So far Apple is the only source for their custom PCIe M.2 blade SSD. Getting a blade SSD for your system is very expensive (new) and finding a used one will be difficult. The good news here is some 3rd parties are hinting they will be supplying the part soon so there is a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel here!

OK, a Fusion Drive only benifits you when you have a traditional HD to fuse with a SSD. A dual SSD needs to be kept as discrete drives as the OS will go nuts! Trying to decide which high speed disk to put the more commonly used data files. Yes, the PCIe interface is faster than the SATA III but the OS does not see it that way.

And, Yes you will need the OWC In-line Digital Thermal Sensor for Hard Drive Upgrade for 27" iMacs 2012 and Later
