RAM upgrade for iMac mid 2011
Hi, I want to upgrade the RAM.
Can I put a 8 GB RAM Chip or do I have to put 2 units of 4 GB each? Thanks.

Yes, you can use 8GB memory modules in your system. In fact with the latest firmware on your system you can populate your system to a max of 32GB of RAM using four 8 GB modules. I do recommend using matched pairs when ever possible. In this case two 8 GB modules would be better than buying just one as later on you would need to replace it with a newer unit to match the second for the bank. You could have different pairs each a matched pair across the different banks.

I have just done this to my 2011 imac - mid or late, even MacTracker can't decide :)
I took the two 2GB modules form one 2011 imac to add to the two 2GB modules already insitu!
At my first attempt I added the two modules to the lower slots - I got the 3 beeps every five seconds.
So then I pulled them all out - reinserted the two modules I'd pulled from the other mac, into the upper
slots and the imac chimed very nicely and everything worked.
So then I added the two modules that already had been in that compouter, but this time I put them
in the lower slots - and bingo, everything worked fine with now four 2GB modules in that iMac.
Very Happy!
But a caution here - my initial problems could have been because I hadn't seated one or some of the
modules properly in the first place - even though I'd was quite aware of that potential problem!
If at first you don't succeed - play around with it till you do! ...or don't! :)
