Why is my mouse clicking on the screen by itself?

My mouse is clicking on things on the screen without me touching it. I can leave it alone all together and its like a ghost is clicking on things for me at random.

To see if the problem is really the mousepad, one should try an external mouse first. If the problem does not show up then it is safe to say the mousepad is broken. One can either resort to an external mouse or replace the mousepad.
