Upgrading Memory with PC Memory

I am wondering what the difference is between the DDR3, 1066 memory on a MacBook pro and standard PC notebook memory matching similar specs? can I use PC memory in my MacBook Pro?

If not, can you please explain what the differences are?

Thanks!

Some of the most daunting problems I have had involved PC memory in Macs. I came very close to replacing a logic board just last week because of this. Mixing Apple factory RAM with PC RAM will drive you nuts, the machine may work just fine for days and then give you a kernel panic on every boot. You don't get tone errors and diagnostic tools will not pick it up. I highly discourage you from using PC RAM, you're just asking for wrist slashing problems.

The only time I have had problems with using PC RAM in a Mac is when the wrong type of RAM is used. What I mean by type is for example if you use ECC vs non ECC or buffered/registered vs non buffered/non registered. Typically server RAM will be ECC buffered and it will be incompatible with Macs AND home PCs.

Yes you can use PC RAM on a Mac Just make sure the specs match and you should be fine! Go here and choose your model then check the specs to see which RAM modules you will need.

I think you need PC3-8500 DDR3 RAM but just double check the site.

Its the same thing because Apple buys ram memory to other fabricants. Just don't mix ram memories from different fabricants. This one is a good upgrade option: http://bit.ly/f5o1Iw
