problems turning on

when i turn the computer on, i don't get the apple icon. i get a finder file icon with a face or a question mark.i tried to reinstall the start up disk, but when i get to the destination section, its blank.

That means your computer can't find the startup disk, usually this is because of a fried HDD. To select the startup disk, press option at startup, if you can't boot from the internal drive, then it's fried and needs to be replaced.
