Laptop shuts down after 1 second

When pressing the power button, the lights flash on and you hear the fan - but after a second, the computer shuts down. Then after 2 seconds starts the process over again. Once it is in this state, the only way of stopping it is by removing the battery and the power cord.

Update

Thanks. I sent the computer to HP and they replaced the motherboard.

mark kantrowitz, just wondering if this was still an issue or if you got it resolved.

mark all you have left is to accept your answer so that we all know that you got it fixed. Hope they did it under their warranty...Good Luck:)

have an HP dv9000, it although old it was expensive when I bought it. It shuts down and does not reboot. Messages say "no operating system". It then starts up after an hour of being shut off. So this sounds like a heat issue. The fan runs well it's not the problem. Even though it's an old laptop, it should work because it has the resources to run video and music. I will try a cooler. Nobody offer a definite answer very sad this machine has been retired only a year after original purchase.

Sounds like the BIOS has been corrupted. This commonly happens after running HP's own "Health Check" and following its recommendation to update the BIOS. Things appear to work fine, but after the machine turns off, you are not able to restart it, and it exhibits the symptom you describe.

It is possible to re-flash the BIOS using a Phoenix Crisis Recovery Disk in an external USB drive, but it's time-consuming to find the right versions of PHLASH16, the BIOS files, etc.

I find it hard to believe that HP allows this extremely serious and well-known problem to persist, and does not provide any information on how to recover. They tell people to send the machine in to them to fix — at the users expense.

I had the same issue with my HP 14, failed BIOS update caused a motherboard malfunction, sent it to hp they fix it and ship it back to me all FREE it was under warranty, now I have same problem and I'm out of the warranty, really sucks

I have the same problem but I keep restarting and when it's on for a few seconds, I press escape and go to bios settings then I reset the bios to default and i save changes. It then boots properly. It keeps coming back once I shut down and have to start again

I would remove all the power from the computer, ac adapter and battery, hold the power button in for 30 seconds then reconnect it to see if that resets it. Would try removing the ram etc.. to see if something is causing it not to post. Some of the HP DV 9000 Models did have an issue with the Nvidia Graphics chip as well.

Nvidia in a settlement is replacing certain units that experience video problems, not sure if you were having issues with that previously but it is worth looking into.

I have a problem, friend gave me laptop that is i mint condition compared to others I have in home.

Sadly it turns off about second, time is so short that even fan doesnt start during that short period, even no display at all. Used it’s rams in my older laptop, they work as intendent, switched cmos battery to new, were trying to launch with battery and AC, battery alone ane. New baterry didn’t make it run, no. Dunno any more solutions, checked voltage on AC/DC adapter. I wont it badly to work, will allow me for running multiple tasks at same time, intsead of my old laptop that is totally usscrewed and lies on 4 bottle caps to not overheatmI can play anarchy onlie for hours using 4 accounts at once with weak machine. There are no blink codes on that new laptop, and its pretty fancy for me, touchpads for sterring most of thing, like volumefront side jack panels etc, just cant get it to launch, any ideas?

Hi @kopczyn1994 ,

Try making it a barebones computer.

Disconnect the RAM, the battery, HDD and DVD drive andremove any peripherals etc, only have power adapter and display and motherboard.

Try to start it and see if it starts.

If it doesn't start you have a motherboard problem which probably is nothing new to you

If it does start, hopefully it stays on and you may get lights or beep error codes for missing RAM.

If you do, switch off the laptop using the Power button, disconnect the power, insert 1 stick of RAM, reconnect the power and start again and see if you can get into BIOS this time.
