Dyson vacuum smells bad and turns off by itself

What model is it?

It seems as though the motor's thermal cut-out fuse may be operating to shut down the machine and prevent a fire.

How old is the machine? If less than 12 months it should still be covered by the manufacturer's warranty. Check the purchase date of the machine to verify if it is still under warranty and if it is consult the documentation that came with the machine or consult the Dyson website as to what you have to do to make a claim for a warranty repair or replacement.
