Hi,
if the picture is dark as well as the LCD screen most likely the problem is that the ccd sensor is faulty.
Here is a link to the Ifixit guide which will give you access to the sensor.
Canon PowerShot SX260 HS Motherboard Replacement
Here is a link to just one supplier of the Lens Unit assembly including the ccd sensor. There are others which may suit you better. It is only shown to give you an idea of the cost.

Are the intermittant nature of the issue and the fact that it can be made to work or not work by pressing lightly on various parts of the selector wheel area consistent with a motherboard, sensor problems?
My sx260 has screen black and photo black that is intermittent and follows pressing on the round mode selector dial on the back. When it goes black I can make it come back by putting slight pressure on that dial. I don't know where the pressure on the dial is acting to solve the issue. It could be a connection there or someplace else. I understand that this is a not uncommon issue. I have used this camera so little over the years. It has lived in a desk drawer. So this problem seems to be defect in the camera.

I had the same issue you are describing. What I did was remove the back plate by removing five of the screws from the above guide leaving the screw on the bottom of the camera for the front case, this made holding the camera easier so it wouldn't fall apart. I then removed the ribbon cable for the selector knob, its the only cable coming from the back case. I then cleaned the contact of the cable with IPA and initial testing is promising, I can use the dial without the screen blacking out.
@cmar Before I try this, is it still solved?
@bob260hs unfortunately it was only temporary. I find now I have to squeeze the camera pretty hard on the rubber grip just under the front canon logo, something must be making poor contact. I think cleaning step above addressed the symptom for a while but was not a cure.
@cmar YouTube guy fiddles with 3 ribbon cables and cleans with alcohol. I don't know if his process actually fixes it because there are no comments that say it worked long term. I don't see what happens to the connections anyhow the camera is sealed like a drum. This is YouTube title for what it's worth: "PowerShot SX260 Screen repair"
