The water causes corrosion and provides circuit paths for the electricity which were not in the phone's operating design and could damage the components.

Then you need to dis-assemble the rest of the phone and clean all the affected parts using Isopropyl Alcohol 90%+ to remove all traces of corrosion and water. Do not use "rubbing alcohol" as in some cases this is only 70% and is not as effective. If you do check the label to verify the amount

Electronics Water Damage

You may have to replace the battery as it is very hard to recover a battery from water damage.

As always with electronics, especially surface mounted PCBs be gentle when handling and especially when brushing away the corrosion. You do not want to remove any components from the board.

Hopefully after you have done all this the phone might possibly work correctly again.

What if the mobile was damaged some years back and hasn't been used/ turned on since quite long time (5 years). I Heard that issues arise with regard to the motherboard. If yes, please let me know as how can this be fixed

Hi, Do you get any indication on the phone when just connecting the charger and switching on the charger only? If not then the battery has failed (after 5 years off the battery will probably never work). Also the phone needs to be opened and at least looked at to see if there is any corrosion on the motherboard. It will be obvious when you see it. You could try cleaning the corrosion off using a softbrush and Isopropyl Alcohol 90%+ (available from pharmacy or drug store (chemist shop?) but the damage may be too great if corrosion is there. Be very gentle when you do this as the components may be fragile on the board. You will also need a new battery. So it becomes an economic decision as you are gambling that hopefully it might work after you do all this not that it will work for sure if you get what I mean.
