Electrical Issues that cause the interior devices to turn on and off.

2004 Kia Optima EX V6

My car used to have flickering lights and dim headlights. The sound of the radio would go in and out. One day, my car stopped while I was driving it. It turned back on immediately and it stayed on. This happened twice more, it started immediately both times. My alternator didn't have the proper output amps so I had it replaced. My battery and surrounding connections were tested and check out fine.

My car is acting crazy now, it doesn't turn off anymore but while I am driving, the radio, A/C, digital clock and dash lights (ABS, Emergency Break, Check Engine) turn on and off. Sometimes my car jolts when this happens. Everything turns on and off for a few seconds, sometimes a few minutes and then it drives normally. This is sporadic, I can't tell when it is going to happen and it can happen multiple times on one trip or not at all.

The mechanic kept my car for days and said they could't find the issue. My car has about 167K miles. Please help!

ssegobia , Intermittent faults can be hard to find. I have seen new alternators bad out of the box. Still sounds like it could be a bad alternator/faulty battery issue have them retested with a load tester. It could also be connection issues loose/corroded/damaged wire/plugs/terminals, it will take some time but you could undue all connections and clean them on alternator/battery/ground on body/engine,etc., look for damage and retighten them to ensure good connection. If not wanting to do the diagnosing/repair have a good technician/mechanic have a look, diagnose and estimate repair. Good luck. I hope this helped you out, if so let me know by pressing the helpful button.

Hi,

Wondering if it could also be a loose power (fuse?)/ earth connection into the ECM as it controls a lot of the instrumentation displays as well as the engine functions.

Have you also had the OBDII port scanned to see if there are any codes lodged which may also point to the problem?

Howdy, @jayeff , Yes anything and everything may have to be checked eventually, intermittent electrical problems can be a bear to solve, something tells me it will be in the area of alternator being bad or a wire/connection or battery. I have also seen corrosion problems at ECM grounds, etc. especially when some are located near a damp source, under seats etc. Thanks for input.
