AirPort Card Doesn't Load Pages Quickly. Is it Bad?

Hello everyone! My friend has an iMac G5 (non-ALS version) with 1.8GHz and 1.5GB of RAM. It runs incredibly well on Leopard, but for some reason, loading pages on the internet takes forever when connected via AirPort. We plugged in an Ethernet cable to see if it would make the pages load faster, and disconnected the Wi-Fi, and it works! The internet is fast now, but it would of course be better to not have that cable lying around the house. I tried resetting Safari, repairing permissions, and even making a new account, but nothing seemed to help it except for the Ethernet cable.

My assumption is that the AirPort card has gone bad. Could that happen and cause the pages not to load quickly? What do y'all think? Thanks so much!

Might be bad

but you do realize that any wireless connection is about 1/10th as fast as wired would be. Great wireless transfer is about 10MB/sec while wires can move 10x minimum and possibly up to 100x the data in the same time.

Also remember not all airport cards are the same. there's a wide difference hardware and protocol (routers or "base stations" and cards) from 80211.A to 802.11N. Antenna(s) and interference on the same band width (older "wireless phone handsets" are well know for this). Other devices from microwaves to motors can also reduce or cut signals.

Use Apllications->Utilities->System Profiler Network:Airport to find out more about your card. You can also use Apllications->Utilities->Network Utility and Apllications->Utilities->Activity Monitor to check card performance.

Hello.

Okay, I'm really not that thick. I know that the AirPort card with ALWAYS be slower than Ethernet. But that's not the case here. I'm saying that on Wi-Fi, the iMac loads pages at speeds literally slower than Dial-up. There's seriously something wrong. I suppose that I also should have mentioned that my friend's family has two iMac G5s, running AirPort on the same network, and the other one works just fine. I think it definitely is the AirPort card then, if you think that could be what makes it bad. And I also don't think it's their router because we run many other devices like other Macs, iPhones, and iPods on it too, and it doesn't effect any of them nor the second iMac at all.

I have no way of knowing how thick any one may/may not be. We get some very enthuisastic (but not so experienced) DIYrs here. The SysProfier app. should detect a faulty card.

Yes, the Airport cards can go bad. Remember that an Airport card has speed limits that the direct ethernet connection does not have. The ethernet will always be faster. Your machine uses a standard Airport Extreme card.

I had at least three faulty airport cards here in recent weeks (slow to no connectivity). There where all in laptops but the hardware is the same, anyway.
