iPad Pro 12.9 touchscreen is unresponsive from time to time

I bought the iPad Pro 3 months after released date until now. Recently my iPad Pro sometimes unresponsive to any kind of tap but as far as I know 5 finger gesture still works but 1/2 fingers tap and swipe is not possible.

I can return to home just like pressing the home button by swipe with 5 fingers.

During unresponsive I cannot

- tap with 1 finger.

- swipe left and right with 1 finger.

- swipe with 2 finger

- zoom in zoom out with 2 finger.

I haven't made any update since I got it from Apple. iOS 10.2

At first I I tried to tap and it doesn't respond but keep tapping it sometimes works. Not so often but I dislike it when it occurs during gaming. Leave it rest awhile and it just back online as it used to be about a couple minutes.

So I made another test by using apple pencil when touchscreen is unresponsive and it works apple pencil works like normal.

I am never drop the iPad, nor crash it against something let say I am taking care of it like a little chid.

Update (06/01/2018)

Now I see where the problem came from. I leave the Apple Pencil battery to runs out completely. Now touchscreen is solved but when I plugged the Apple Pencil back just within a first 3 seconds I having a same issue again.

Update (09/23/2018)

After iOS 12 the problem still there even it’s a bit less but it seems to occur from some kind of angle and rotation. Shaking iPad Pro a few times seems to be the best way to fix the issue temporary. I have to shake it a lot when I am playing in bed.

Update (10/01/2018)

I think one of the problem that I believe in… Must be the iPad fault itself (bending). I mean the material that made or construct the iPad Pro is as thin as iPad mini so it is easily to bend.

I am noticed this problem because I am once visit the shop and staff put my iPad pro 12.9 on the table and told me that very very slightly of iPad pro is bend. I think because this bend causing touchscreen sensitivity to not working properly in some certain angle, especially in landscape mode. However I am still having problem in portrait mode also when playing Clash Royale. There are some kind of hardware system or piece that determine what angle of iPad pro is and rotate the screen for. So while this problem occur I am also seeing my iPad Pro doesn’t rotate when tilt to either from Landscape to Portrait or Portrait to landscape. Shaking like !&&* is one of the best calibration but only works in a short period of time.

When playing while on bed that iPad Pro is facing down to me, also making iPad sensitivity nearly stop working.

I wish I am still have a video that I took. You all should try by changing background to apple logo. While problem occurs or screen is freezing or sensitivity is bad, You will see Apple logo background is shaking like !&&*.

Background must be set to Dynamic to see how it works.

Sensitivity is bad while playing or typing, there will be some spot or whole touchscreen stop working in very short time but can come and go many times during a few seconds period.

Screen freezing will take a lot longer and whole iPad touchscreen is not working.

Both can be temporary fixed by Shaking real hard (make sure you are holding iPad firmly so it won’t fly out)

Update (10/10/2018)

I don’t have time to get a replacement but right now All I know is iPad Pro seems to choose the time of error by it’s own. Problem always occur at night while I’m in bed. Some kind of angle or iPad orientation?

Never have this problem while working. Could be an iPad orientation that cause this problem? or because of night shift?

Something weird in my iPad Pro.

I am no longer have this problem while using before 5 PM… But problem seems to start at 8 PM and more…

Update (10/11/2018)

Anyone have this problem of shaking iPad logo. I did a clean install already so it doesn’t have so many apps like in this video but shaking still be but less occurs. This problem doesn’t occur every time when touchscreen stop working but touchscreen 100% not working when this thing occurs.

I am noticing this because I did set my background as dynamic and only apple logo and by this I can see when problem occurs.

Update (10/13/2018)

Buy a new one is best solution for now. Today i went to Apple care and staff cannot diagnosed my iPad problem but simply replied. It’s normal for any iPad under heavy usages for many years. They do not have repair policy here but instead return and giving me a new (with a %#*@ price)

I might wait for a new iPad to come and see who will sell their iPad in very good price and condition..

or grab a new iPad instead

Update (12/17/2018)

Ok now to the last update. I found out this problem also caused in iPad Pro 3rd Gen or to say both iPad 11 and 12.9 iPad Pro 2018 also have a sensitivity issue. After talking to Apple they already addressed the issue as Static electricity which will cause to some people. While iPad seems not working to me but it is still working with Apple pencil , Rubber tip pencil also working normally. Some of my family member can use while it doesn’t respond to my finger Because something has to be with electrical discharge and static electricity in your body and finger.

Because iPad Pro has a magnet inside while other iPads doesn’t.

Right now nothing we can do until Apple solve it.

Another thing, if you having this problem Go grab the Apple keyboard case it seems to solved this problem perfectly. Many of my friends in facebook group say the same thing that problem disappeared when attached to Apple smart keyboard (only works with Apple keyboard, not Magic or any bluetooth keyboard)

Update (12/20/2018)

My lastest information after I heard so many members in iPad Pro facebook group telling me that Apple smart keyboard folio can fix this issue so I did tried something different. Because I owned a Gen 1 12.9 iPad Pro so I cannot find old folio in Apple store, I got plastic case with magnetic cover from AliExpress instead and yes, now I can play this iPad Pro in any direction, Any angle, no more shaking background, no more unresponsive touchscreen. All gone. Just like a new one. So what people said about this must be true and because the display product in Apple store also come with Folio thats’s why we never see the display product having this problem. I believe the magnetic case discharge the static electric from the screen or from magnetic beneath the screen. I am also use a same old temped glass on iPad Pro 3 years ago so now that the glass is not the main issue.

For 3rd Gen iPad Pro, You still have to pick the Glass film wisely as some of them may causing face ID to not working properly and some causing the touchscreen have less sensitivity.

Update (01/18/2019)

iPad Pro gen 3 seems to work perfectly without any protective case and film or glass. Not the way we intend to use but as I keep watching people using them without any of these, They don’t have a problems (Some still but very low)

Update (01/20/2019)

Guys and Girls. If you have an old iPad Pro that already out of warranty. try to lower the battery and remove all the case and protective screen cover if possible. Visit Apple and asking for battery repair. Since Apple don’t have battery repair like iPhone they will give you a new one with a lot less cost. For Apple in my country will cost around 100 US$ for a new one. Just hope that your iPad won’t show any problems to their technician and perhaps you will have a chance for a new one with low price. I gave it to Apple and never mentioned even a single problem. They doesn’t seems to noticed too.

I also have iPad Pro 12.9 inch. Sporadically the touchscreen will not respond. I did all the updates and a full factory reset. Still does respond every now and then. Sometimes for 1-2 minutes, other times only for a few seconds. For $1100 I expect a lot more from apple. Not happy at all

I have been having problems with my iPad Pro 10.5 for three months now. The screen often and arbitrarily ignores my touch, especially when I'm typing. I tried resetting and using different settings. Finally, I did a full reset, after many hard restarts, and it did not solve the issue. I'm starting to loathe my iPad.

So far I can see some saying it’s:

1) Software issue

2) Hardware issue

3) Rotate the screen

4) Turn off Bluetooth

5) App issues

6) Backup and restore

So when will a true and documented solution comes about I will try It. Where is Apple in this issue? Seems to be a lot of people with this problem. My IPad Pro 12.9 with Verizon cellular and 256 Gb worked fine....at first. But now I am conflicted.

What I know the most is when the iPad Pro was out with iOS it's working very very fine until updated to iOS 10 I think there is a flaw in the iOS which Apple couldn't addressed it yet. I have been received a new iPad Pro from Apple after my Anger smash the iPad Pro for free but the unresponsive touch still kinda annoying. But most case it seems to happening to users that connect with Apple Pencil.

My iPad Pro 12.9 does this constantly and I have no Apple Pencil. Apple needs to admit there’s a problem and fix it free.

I already exchanged my new (3months old) iPad Pro because of the same issue. Now (after few months) everything’s back, touch screen is not responding from time to time.. I’m very disappointed and tired of this. I’m thinking of returning it. I don’t have a pencil so I don’t think this is the problem. Too much headache

Same problem here. Happens frequently.

Having same problem for about a month. I have had my iPad Pro 12.9 1st generation for 2 years and it has just now started acting up. Even now typing is a problem due to screen not responding intermittently!

I have the same issue with my 12.9 2018 ipad pro. It is definable a hardware issue! As when i keep the ipad by two hands it is not responsive to the touch on the center sometimes, but when I put the ipad on the table it works just fine!

So, it is the hardware, i.e. screen problem issue and we should hold Apple responsible and liable for the defective hardware... My wife have another ipad pro 12.9 2016 and it never had any problem whatsoever with screen, even though it had been updated with all the new updates!

We should put our hands together and make a very firm objections to Apple and if they don’t take it seriously, we should file a “class action” lawsuit for this hardware issue and have Apple to replace their faulty screen. We paid a lot of money for this crap and deserve to have a decent product!

iPad Pro 12.9 3 months old at time of first incident -never dropped! Everything worked fine playing Vainglory MOBA till 4 in the morning. Nov/Dec 2017 I think iOS updated and it has been worthless for reliability ever since! To say I am so irritated with Apple is an understatement! Purchased specifically for this gaming app and now I just expect it to screw me every time I try to play randomly freezing in middle of battles where other people count on you. I believe it’s software related based on time of events. If Apple does not make this right I will never buy another product and I will bad mouth them without end. Yes I’ve tried every fix short of replacing it and now it’s go time! -_-

And to answer many questions - Freezes randomly no matter what app/configuration/settings. I wiped it with a fresh install disabling all/various touch screen settings with nothing else on device and it still glitches !!!

I have the same problem with my iPad Pro 12.9, few months after use. I took videos and showed it to Apple and they replaced both my smart cover and the iPad with new ones. Ave the A1671 iPad Pro 12.9 and it is horrible to use. The reason is the touch screen. It only works at a snail pace leave one second between each letter when typing and do not touch the screen anywhere else. That is the only way it works. It is a terrible design I have to restart every 20 minutes because it locks up and it is good for a few minutes then locks again but only if I use the touch screen. Leave a video playing on YouTube ok but impossible to use for email. I’m finished with Apple as their service is crap where I am and I can’t take it to a proper Apple shop until the year is up so no guarantee. The local Apple reseller has never heard of such a problem and tells me to take it to a proper Apple shop. They don’t speak English at the Apple Reseler. I would be better off getting in touch with the manufacturer in China. If I do not touch the sides or hold it there is improvement. Now that took 26 minutes to write.

의 답변

Me too, IOS 12 has not resolved the problem

의 답변

I think it’s time Apple got the finger out on this one. Widely reported and experienced on the pro 12.9, they now routinely advise all the usual ‘fixes” - which don’t make any difference. And once they have run you through all these non-fixes you are advised to submit your device for a hardware examination. Truth is ; the Apple IPad 12.9 has a major problem with intermittent unresponsiveness which Apple support have not been able to resolve - very off putting. (Even now I am having problems typing).

의 답변

Same for me. I can’t use my touch screen a lot

의 답변

Latest iOS update seems to solved it completely for me for about a week, the problem reoccurred just once, but after a restart everything is fine.

Battery life has increased dramatically too. This is an iPad Pro 12.9 256 GB cellular (2nd Gen - bought last September).

This tells me that there was some software issues involved. Don’t get your units replaced, just press Apple customer service (like I did) to put pressure on them to fix bugs.

Hope you guys follow through with my advice. I think it’s of paramount importance to show vigilance and persistence. Companies want to maximize profits (which I’m totally fine with) but sometimes neglect after sales maintenance and service.

Happy new year to all

So, after a few months of owning my new iPad Pro and working through this issue, i'm starting to realize that it has to do with other things touching the screen at the same time.

Sometimes, when i'm holding the iPad a certain way (e.g., balanced between my thumb and palm on one hand), the issue will pop up, but then I place the iPad on the table and the issue goes away.

I think it has something to do with the edge of the screen registering some object as a finger incorrectly. At least that's my .02 based on a couple months of playing with the device. Hope that helps some folks. It's still really frustrating. iPad Mini (1st Gen) and my iPhone 6s don't have these issues.

Chris, this is not correct for everyone and is misleading information on the forum. I and many have had this screen problem when it’s docked into the keyboard where nothing can interfere with poor handling of the device. This is a fault with either the hardware or software, not clumsy hands.

의 답변

Sorry if you view my post as misleading... was simply stating my observations. Maybe my issue is different than yours *shrugs*

의 답변

I actually agree with Chris. I have also noticed this.

That said while similar I have also tested with the iPad Pro 12.9 sitting on a desk and not held seeing the issue here. I believe it is related to the pencil as while the issue was occurring with an APP I took the pencil out of BT range and the problem went away.

Returning the pencil caused a recurrence of the issue. This was done without removing focus from the app in question.

The pencil always worked on the screen when fingers did not.

‘Forgetting’ the Bluetooth connection to the pencil also seemed to clear it up.

의 답변

Chris, I have the same problem with mine. If anything else is touching the screen it is unresponsive. I’ve also found the same thing to be true with my iPhone 7 and my iPhone 7 Plus. Had the same problem with iPhone 6 and my iPhone 6 Plus, the 5 and the 5S. The last problem free iPhone were my iPhone 4’s. My first generation Retina display iPad never had any problems, still doesn’t. The quality of Apple devices and assessories are for s**t. My iPad Pro worked fine until recently. Don’t know if it started with the iOS 11 software. I noticed the keys “sticking” when I was typing. Then it became unresponsive when I tapped on app icons. When are they releasing the next generation of iPads? If anyone knows or has heard any rumors.

의 답변

I had a similar though that I might have been holding some fingers too close to the screen. Now I type very deliberately with only one fingers and I still get the non-appearing characters. I have to do a hard restart every 15-60 minutes, problems start emerging again after 10-15 minutes. Very frustrating. I’m looking for a different tabeteasei’s s fustrtg. That last piece was he iPads version of tablet because it’s so frustrating. Typed with onefinger very slowly to make sure every key is pressed. Bye, have to restart again ....

removed all of the widgets on the notification page , turning everything off (background refresh, Siri, dictation, thumbprint lock, location, gestures, Bluetooth, etc. removed my cover with “Smart Cover feature” and it seems to be helping .

i suspect that it’s due to the accelerometer which causes the delay

Different things seem to be working for different people.

What hasn’t worked for me: Full erase, iTunes restore

Widget Removal

  1. Slide from top down
  2. swipe left to right one time
  3. tap “edit”
  4. tap “-“ then “remove” for each of the widgets (e.g. news, weather, calendar)
  5. tap “done” at the top/ middle/ off to the right hand corner after removing.
  6. I do believe that this is a software issue because I wasn’t experiencing this with 10.2. Hope this helps.

The problem still occurred after the above steps were taken

Update (01/03/2019)

On iPad 12.9 2nd gen, been having touchscreen lag since iOS 11. I updated to 12 and the lag seemed to stop for a while but eventually resurfaced. I did the small updates here and there. I noticed that the touch problem seemed to get better immediately after the update but eventually returned after some time had passed. I just updated to 12.1.1 and everything seems to be ok for now. Will continue to monitor for touch screen problems. If they don’t come back, I’m never updating again!

@JohnC, I also have noticed that it seems to be triggered often when connecting or disconnecting the smart cover. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be the only thing triggering it and, for me, reversing the connection doesn't seem to undo it. The only thing that seems to fix it for me is a hard restart—and sometimes I have to hard restart it a dozen times in a row before the iPad will sense my touches again.

It seems that the keyboard registration / scanning is displaced from .5 to two inches sometimes. One time, I pressed the “i” button by a “-“ was typed, a full two inches off.

Other times, it totally ignores my input. For example, I typed “hoagie” and “agie” was displayed. This is an egregious issue for Apple to solve.

I am seriously looking into the Surface Pro.

Update (09/26/2018)

It clicks, but no caracter is typed.

Audible cliks are enabled. I type a character, heard a click, but no character was displayed.

I believe this is due to a registration error where the keyboard thinks I typed in the middle of two characters as opposed to the center one character. Apple should have a keyboard calibration app / utility to fix this problem

I bought the expensive iPad Pro 12.9 G3 keyboard/case. After three weeks, there has been zereo soft keyboard lockups. A couple of times, the hard keyboard did not work, as if it was not recognized. So the hard AND soft keyboard were open at the same time.

I agree with the other poster that a cheap Chinese magnetic case may cause the iPad Pro magnetic sensors to activatye/deactivate in a way that may cause lockup. This is speculation because I used to remove the cheap Chinese case from the G1 and G2 iPad Pro 12.9 and the keyboard still locked up.

Just confirmed after so many times of trying and researching.

This appears to be a universal issue among iOS 11 and 12 on mostly iPad Pro 12.9

With some “tweaking” you might happen to get rid of the bug, however, this is an issue from systematic level so it’s none curable.

So far I have restarted reset my iPad Pro for like 20+ times, tried all kinds of ways, and was “forced” to uploading/reporting to Apple customer service/engineers about my issue. They thanked me verbally numerously but I don’t have time to donate, especially when this company is full of cash.

I’m done with them.

Conclusion:

1: sell/return your ipad for iPad Pro 10.5 which mostly resolved this issue (now I see why previous owner sold me this iPad Pro)

2: DFU install iOS (or not), wait for future iOS. It might solve the issue, might not, god knows.  Live with it.

There is no 3rd option, unfortunately. And apple don’t care.

This is my last post, unless I have a true solution, I won’t be back.

Take care.

Yes, but this shows that it's certainly NOT a hardware related issue so trading your perfectly fine iPad with some refurbished one (that you don't know what it's been through) is not the best idea. Apple should find a permanent fix for this as it seems to be software related. Like I said in other comments my iPad is virtually brand new (just a month+ old) and the problem appeared a little after a month with no physical occurrences that would justify this malfunction.

Interestingly, my daughter’s iPhone 8 Plus started freezing up completely. She too removed the otter box cover she had it in and it seems to have solved her problem as well. I think there’s something about covers and screen freezes. Maybe it puts slight pressure on a certain part of the screen and makes them freeze. It, it’s pretty amazing the number of people with this problem and iPad Pro and the different solutions they’ve found to fix the problem. It’s a little bizarre.

No fix in 12.1 either.

I can also confirm that whenever the screen is unresponsive, changing the angle makes the screen responsive again. I happen to have issues with the unresponsive screen a lot while hanging on the couch with my iPad in one hand and typing with the other. Flat on the table the issues are non-existent. Also using the Apple Pencil the screen works perfect without any issues. I've also tried using the Apple Pencil with the iPad under the same angle and that also works great. Very odd.

Removed magnetic cover

I removed my magnetic “smart feature” cover. It isn’t the original Apple cover, it’s a spigen cover with magnetic wake function, but I don’t think it matters. I think that the delay is connected to the accelerometer because if the iPad is flat or stationary then the touch problem doesn’t occur. If I move the iPad slightly from its stationary position, (e.g. Holding it in my hands) then the touch problems happens. Also I noticed that it happens more often when I would fold the cover flap back and would use the iPad with two hands. After removing the magnetic cover I cope with this in a few ways:

  1. When it occurs I will press the home button and then the app icon a couple of times. Go in and out from app to home screen approximately 5 times
  2. If I plan to hold the Ipad in my hands then I unlock the iPad and move it around in different orientations to allow to accelerometer to resolve itself and then usually the problem doesn't happen.

The problem also only occurs after unlocking/awaking the iPad so i upped the time out to 5 min to let the iPad to warm up.

I hate that this is happening and was very fustrated in the beginning. I fell out of warranty in October but the problem occurred after I updated to ios11 during July. If you get your hands on a replacement that is on 10 I recommend staying on it. Updates never seem to be worth it for me.

I tried removing cover (which is Apple's native cover) and it indeed didn't help. But you're definitely right about iPad laying flat on the table - my friend who draws a lot on the iPad using Pencil never had this issue (while I'm having it a lot). He always uses the iPad while it's laying on the table. And I mostly hold it in my hands.

Have you tried locking your screen in one single orientation? Maybe it would lock the accelerometer? Also have you tried turning on "Limit Frame Rate" (as noted above by Lin)?

The only way to get this problem solved is by gaining the attention of Apple. Mr.Hymm, you are the original poster and it’d be a great idea to release an update above with the link of Apples feedback page so that every person who comes on here and has this same problem can report to Apple. Just looking at the statistics and I’m amazed, this thread has been viewed over 123,275 times so it’d be a perfect idea to have all those persons report to Apple and gain their attention or else we won’t get anywhere with this. i think apple is having issues with pencil / palm rejection and making the touch screen work. This would be an issue for users that takes lots of notes, going between apps with pencil and touch but they probably haven't taken on board since most people probably don't use pencil all day long like I do . Not sure what can be done-hoping it will resolve with update

If you're having this issue, you should try to use iTunes on your Mac or PC to backup and restore your iOS software to factory settings, as this process erases the information and settings on your device and installs a fresh copy of the latest iOS software. Temporarily setup your iPad Pro as new to test your issues, and then restore your backup and test the issues again. this worked for me

1) Software issue >> Could be iOS but never see a problem in iOS 9

2) Hardware issue >> I smashed the iPad with anger and get a new one and still have a problem???

3) Rotate the screen >> helped from time to time but not every time

3.5) Restart the iPad or Turn off the screen and turn it back on >> helped from time to time but not every time

4) Turn off Bluetooth >> tried and still not working

5) App issues >> it is happening to all apps so not the app issues for sure

6) Backup and restore >> tried and still the same

Best solution I have is to place iPad nearly flat or flat on a table and 90 degree vertical which usually will 100% working all the time without any problems.

So I think I mostly fixed this on my side. Previously I wrote that removing Smart Cover worked but I still was experiencing unresponsive moments. And it was getting worse with time. There’s almost no issues after I did the following:

1) Updated to iOS 11.3.1 - that helped a bit. Apple wrote it fixes an issue with the screen, maybe it improves iPad behavior as well. I’m not sure but my impression it does help.

2) Removed Facebook app (it helped with battery life at least)

3) Went to Background App Refresh and disabled almost all applications in there. I think disabling everything helps a lot! But I need at least Mail and a couple of others.

Using this config second day in a row and there are still random unresponsive moments but only a few of them. I have Bluetooth enabled, Apple Pencil connected and Smart Cover as well.

My iPad is still under warranty, I’ll wait more to see if it’s a software issue in the end and if it gets worse will go to Apple Service. It was a very annoying experience lasting three months.

my latest theory is the internet connection issue.

my internet was having issues and the screen freeze came back.

I reset all the network settings on my ipad (under settings - reset - networksettings. ) and this is working agains so far.

If you have a website that is having log in issues, etc.. it will continuously try to connect to back up to cloud, etc... so basically apple made this thing that needs to be on perfect internet all the time. .. cart before the horse.

Update (10/03/2018)

My new Ipad Pro from few months ago has remained problem free after fresh installation (not from back up.)

Previous new ipad pro was installed from backup. This time, I re-installed all the apps by hand, my media (music and pictures) transferred directly from the replaced Ipad, and other media from drive, cloud, etc.

This was MAJOR pain in the ass, but my Ipad Pro has remained freeze free for now. It might be that installing complete icloud backup has bugs in it or tries to install apps that no longer exits, work, or buggy.

It DID force me to clean up everything on my Ipad Pro. Hope everyone’s screen freeze issues resolves soon - it’s horrible.

Since, I had my Smart Keyboard replaced as well - it completely stopped working. It seems the connecting fabric conducting material within the keyboards get worn. :( Sad for such an expensive item, but at least they replaced it.. it should be made to last for few years at least .

Hi, all. iPad Pro 12.9 512 WiFi 2017 with Apple Pencil.

I’ve come here for an answer but of course didn’t found it. But then after furiously ripping off my matte screen protector (then regret it because I love drawing with that applied), restart (which didn’t do it either), this what worked for me:

- turn off Bluetooth. iPad will notify that your Bluetooth peripheral will reconnect after 24hours

- long press reboot

- after login try gestures. All seemed worked fine

- turn on Bluetooth. Plugged my Apple Pencil to reconnect

- voila. Worked just flawlessly like before. Hope this helps.

Now I’ll have to get replacement for my screen protector (sigh)

iOS 12 seems to have helped for me. I updated directly from the device and then I also performed an “erase all content and settings”. I have also removed my screen protector and now use a soft plastic case instead of the hard plastic/magnetic cover case I was previously using.

So far everything seems to be good. I am enjoying iOS 12 and the freezing hasn’t been happening as often. I’m not sure if I’m just getting use to the freezing, thus less frustrated when it occurs. Though up until this point, all has been well.

I took off my case and no issues. I got to thinking and realized that I had the case folded up so the magnetic cover that turns the iPad on when I opened and closed it was on the back of the iPad. I decided to try turning that function off and it worked! No issues!!I turned off Lock/Unlock feature under settings/display brightness for the iPad cover and now no issues. Anyone tried to restore to factory settings or DFU mode and then use iTunes to do the upgrade/restore?

although it could be hardware issue, I worried if that’s software side since there are reported fixes.

Remember, latest iTunes with DFU/new ipad mode, do not restore backup, set up as new ipad.

with my last iPad Pro the faulty one, I upgraded to iOS 12.1 beta, and only YouTube would freeze, with handful times of unresponsive for half second each time. I still decided to replace it but that could be a sign indicating this is a software issue.

i did use iTunes + downloaded firmware and restored within DFU mode. So if you happen to see this post and want to give it a try, please spend a few minutes to reply this post and post your results so more could be beneficial from your experience.

So glad to see the same issue reported here. It feels like proof it’s not user error. I took my iPad to Apple and their reply is that there’s nothing wrong. However, their test was placing it flat on the table and touching several keys. Of course the issue didn’t present but from reading the posts, I too have noticed that it acts up while holding it or at other angles. Only way to fix key lock is move pad back and forth like a reload to a shotgun. It lasts about 3 minutes and problems start again. I’m going back to Apple with this, by armed with a video I took of me attempting to use iPad and screen failing consistently.

Happens to me too, when my iPad is in either landscape or,portrait, Bluetooth turned off, also removed all widgets, also did fresh install as new iPad, also doesn’t matter if it’s on its dock (so not holding, iPad is not moving (unless you count a slight table wobble when I touch iPad), something I notice whilst drilling up and down on this web page is I can make it freeze by raking my finger off the screen momentarily and then carry on scrolling up and down, freeze happens almost ever time if I take my finger off and carry on moving finger up and and down (without taking finger off), So does anyone know why that taking finger off for a tiny moment would make it freeze? Hardware? Or software? I’m thinking hardware reading everyone’s comments.

I don’t think it’s Apple Pencil though, as I don’t have a pencil, and Bluetooth is turned off anyway.

My cover isn’t a Smart Cover, although it does have that magnet that turns off the screen when you close the cover, but I’ve tried raking it out of the cover and still happens, so many red herrings on this web page, no offence, Apple are clearly aware, with so many users affected, I for one am going to be a lot more vocal about this in the run up to Xmas because people need to know the product is faulty, when they make one that works they can give me a replacement!

Mine is a 2nd gen, and my problem is probably linked to the apple pencil, when I disconnect it completely(unpair) or just let the battery run flat the problem seems to go away, or at least a lot less.

Another thing is that when it happens mine canbe fixed just by turing off the screen with the power button and unlocking it again which takes only about 1 sec..

Of course it’s really annoying but the fact that it can just be fixed by turing off and on the screen fixes this leads me to believe that it’s a minor sensivity/electric charge problem ''and not the flex that’s causing it…

btw my mom bent her 1 inch up (screen side) by where the volume buttons are and it doesn’t have any problems so…

I really have no idea…

Edit: also try taking your case off, some case just bend your iPad too much until it doesn’t work, I did that a while ago and it worked for a month, now I don’t know what’s going on anymore.

The 1 inch bent off the table freaky looking ipad doesn’t have this problem AT ALL so i really dont know what’s going on.

I’ve had the same issue from the beginning, since buying my IPad Pro 12.9” 2nd Generation. Also have the 1st gen, and it doesn’t have this issue. While still unresolved, Apple Support has finally admit that this is a known software issue, and said they would try to resolve via this latest (12.1) iOS update.

History:

  • I tried to live with it for the first view months, but gave up and called Apple Support (iPad on AppleCare)
  • Went through ALL steps (reboot, factory reset, etc) but problem persisted.
  • After a week and number of calls, Apple offered to replace, since they “couldn’t reproduce, and didn’t see any other reports of this”… (right…).
  • Receieved new iPad week after, and WHILE setting it up, there was the same touch issue
  • Got sick, and couldn’t follow up for a couple months. Finally opened new ticket / added to old ticket.
  • Based on experience, I insisted that it’s a software issue, and asked for Support to connect to my iPad, so that they could initiate a Log transfer, which they did, and explained exactly at what time this freeze occurred
  • Took a few weeks, but Support finally called back, and said the Engineering was able to see an issue in the logs, and confirmed it was a SOFTWARE (iOS) issue. They added it to their bug tracker, and said they would try to resolve by the next major update
  • After the iOS 12.1 update this week, it is STILL happening.
  • Called Support again, and insist that they try to do SOMETHING, as I still haven’t had a working / reliable iPad Pro since purchase, and cannot rely on their product in a pro environment (eg: use it to drive a keynote, meeting, demo, etc).

Waiting to hear back. They would also like me to reinstall the latest iOS directly in iTunes, instead of over the air (wifi). Not sure why this would matter, but too tired of this, so will wait for a bit.

Has anyone who had this issue, seen it resolved after a clean 12.1 update?

Thanks!

I have been suffering with this issue for months now. I’ve had my suspicions that it is a software issue but the problem started occurring for me at a random point after having iOS 12 installed for months. The responsiveness of the touchscreen has gradually dropped over time, while the Pencil continued to work perfectly. Eventually I started getting skipped keys while typing, scrolling would pause mid-scroll, but the Home button and rotate always worked perfectly. It was driving me crazy, I was paranoid that my fingers were too dry, the surface coating was deteriorating, my fingerprints were causing detection issues on the huge display, and thought perhaps my screen protector was causing the issue. I noticed that the condition improved somewhat when I removed the iPad from its leather case. This indicated to me that the problem lies in the capacitive touch part of the display.

TL:DR, I was able to fix my iPad 12.9” Pro by measuring the flatness of the screen and gently flexing it back into shape. Even a tiny amount of flex can cause the touchscreen to stop working correctly.

To do this fix yourself, you need a precise flat edge tool. I recommend getting a machinist or carpenter square that has a sharp edge, like this one: https://www.amazon.com/Tools-Combination...

Once you have a nice flat edge, hold it against your screen at vertical, horizontal, and diagonal left/right. If your issue is caused by screen flex, you will see the screen fail to touch the edge of your measuring tool. You need to flex the iPad until the screen is in full contact with the straightedge from every angle, more or less. Just be very very careful not to over-flex the iPad, it’s full of sensitive electronics and dangerous lithium ion batteries :) I didn’t flex it more than maybe 1/2” deviation total, and that was enough to make my iPad flat again. My iPad was maybe only 1-1.5mm deviated from flat, and it was enough to cause tons of issues. I’d say that’s an issue with the design.

I finally got frustrated enough and did this fix today, my iPad suddenly became as responsive as it was on day 1, no reboot necessary!

의 답변

If we assume the case is creating a flex on your iPad Pro, and that is causing touch issues. And when the iPad is not being flexed when it being in a case, and there are no touch issues.

This sounds like a Touch IC problem on your logic board (PBA).

Was a big problem in iphones, still is, and is probably not exclusive to them. Your iPad is probably going to get worse down the road. Think about how you put the case on in off, it definitely creates a little bit of flex on it. Keep in mind that the aluminium frames of iPads are a lot weaker than they seem. Get it checked out by a mobo tech, or try it out yourself.

Hope it helps

  • turn off background app refresh
  • turn off fetch new data
  • reduce emotion.
  • after that I did reset just by holding the wake and home button for like 10 seconds
  • after that downloaded a new keyboard from the App Store there are many there but I choose Go keyboard and delete the original apple keyboard because it some times don’t respond to click.

No, it worked for me for a day then in started freezing again. However, I tinkered some more and now I would declare my iPad fixed. I had switched off airdrop. Then switched off Siri and background refresh. Then switched off the battery percentage. I’ve since reinstated both airdrop, refresh and Siri. Battery percentage is still off. My iPad is like new.

의 답변

Update. OK three months on how’s it going....

Switching off the battery percentage certainly helps, but eventually the freezing returns. Cycling the percentage switch cures, but only for a day or two, then freezing is back. My iPad got so frustrating to use, I tried resetting everything, other than deleting data. I deleted the Facebook app and some other apps. I did suspect BBC News app and still do, but I guess most people won’t have this. Reset home screen and networks. Everything works great, no freezing.

Then.... I started grouping apps in folders and reinstalled Facebook. Freezing returned immediately.

So... deleted Facebook. Reset home screen. Did not group anything in folders.

Over a month now and my iPad has not frozen once. Even typing this, it hasn’t stumbled over a single key press. I do suspect that Facebook is playing a major part in the freezing episodes, but I’m vary wary of using folders on the home screen also. Avoiding both is certainly working for me at present.

I can’t believe these problems been going on for years and yet Apple still selling the iPads like there is no problem at all!! I didn’t know this problem until I got my new iPad Pro 12.9 2018.

I just got my iPad Pro 12.9 2018 with the same problems. Have not had problem with the original iPad and iPad Air 2 at all! If I knew I won’t buy the new iPad Pro. My iPad Air 2 is still working perfectly except the battery is losing charges.

I believe it is hardware problem (Someone mentioned about unbending the iPad?!). Tried to cut corners and squeeze all those components in the pad??

For $1150 and getting a pad not as good as the old original iPad costing a lot less, I am so disappointed with Apple!

Nope! I tried it with no case. Same problem! Here is a post for another forum.

I don't think it is a software problem at all. The Genius Bar has no idea what is going on so all they can do is erase everything and start over! It "helped" but didn't "fix" the problem!

With mine everything is fine when I have my charging cable plugged in. As if now I have all the power I need to evenly distribute all the "power" to the screen area so all the "touches" are recognized! Design flaw?? Quality control?? (Not everyone has the problem)!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tried plugged and unplugged charging cable many times and duplicated the problem! With battery 100% charged!

Again so disappointed with Apple!

Using Surface Pro to write emails now.

의 답변

Hmmm.... Did you check that your iPad doesn't bend? Sometimes slightly bend also cause the iPad touchscreen went bad too. I did bend my iPad Pro back so it helps but I won't recommend for new iPad Pro 2018 as it's too thin and might void the warranty.

The only thing I know is the iPad Pro 2018 have the highest claim and refund of all time.

의 답변

BTW I asked people a few things and I know that when touchscreen is unresponsive it is still work on some people. I let my sister play while touchscreen not respond to me but it does respond to her finger. Weird. Another thing, even touchscreen is not responding, rubber tip pen still works.

In your case if iPad cannot distribute the electricity evenly and causing iPad Pro not working properly, Within 14 days you can ask for a refund. Return and refund.

One hopeful tip :

i had the exact same problem. Tried software reset, iOS update, physically bending(turns out table was bent. iPad was not).

realized touch doesn’t work only when held in hands/moving/shaking. So disabled shake to undo which uses accelerometer and lock screen rotation.

So far touch works flawless. Considering the problem appeared after iOS I-date, it definitely seems to be software problem that messes with the accelerometer.

Might not work for everyone. But give it a try!

Not sure if this is the answer, but i’ve been having this issue for many months. Not certain if it coincided with the change when I went to iOS 12 beta. But I read comments which seemed to link to the Apple Pencil so I went to Bluetooth settings and removed the Apple Pencil and it’s been behaving since. I had the issue even with no Apple Pencil around

I’ll have to see if it works long term but it could be that the palm rejection is kicking in automatically. I had the Apple Pencil and an older Apple wireless keyboard in my Bluetooth settings so maybe there’s a conflict there too. Wonder if someone else can confirm the same result. If so maybe removing and readding the pencil will work. I’m leaving it off for now.

의 답변

Maybe coincidence but my wife bought a pencil, not Apple and not Bluetooth, but I tried it on my iPad. The freezing started just after.

I had an Asus touchscreen device that also froze. In this instance it was electrostatic build up on the cable from screen to pcb. Discharging the cable cured the freezing.

However, my iPad issues are certainly software related. So far I’ve defeated it and everything is working perfectly. I think there are probably a hundred reasons why it happens, which is probably why Apple can’t fix it. For me, deleting Facebook and resetting the home screen works. Ive found that grouping apps in folders initiates freezing, so I just cluster similar items by screen.

I’ve not tried the pencil again though...

I will be testing if this is an iOS 12 problem on my iPad 10.5” because an iOS 11.4 - 11.4.1 jailbreak was released a day or two ago and I was fortunate enough to save my iOS 11.4 and 11.4.1 blobs which means I can downgrade from my current version which is iOS 12.1.2 to iOS 11.4 or 11.4.1 (which ever I choose) I will give you guys an update on whether downgrading to iOS 11 fixed the unresponsive touch for me.

Hey dude, pls follow these steps to see if it improves. I restored to a “faulty” backup and had those unresponsive ness again. I then reset settings (not content and settings, just settings, so your personal data will remain untouched), and now it’s working flawless again.

I would first recommend you to DFU install iOS 12.1.4, as this would wipe off any possible bugs. If the touch issue remains, it could be some buggy codes left in the basic level of your touch sensor. Try the “touch accommodation”. Once you find it’s all working fine, restore your backup (not recommended), and if problem reoccurres, reset the settings only.

I now have the keyboard sound turned on to track the potential issue, to my surprise, it’s working fine.

Again, I’ll keep you guys posted, since my problem is very typical and it happened to all my 4 iPad Pro 12.9.

Best luck to all of you!

의 답변

의 답변

2-22-2019 update

Also reduced refresh rate. In theory this should be dealing with another module which controls screen, instead of touch sensor. However, after reducing it, and turning off ‘touch accommodation” still works flawless.

Method:

Settings —> general —> accessibility —> display accommodations —> limit refresh rate

의 답변

2-22-2029 afternoon update

I turned off iPad on purpose. Upon turning back on, this unresponsive ness happened again, no matter what I tried.

Now it works flawless again, here is what I did. (Before doing so, make sure you have a DFU installed firmware, highly recommended!)

1. Reset settings

2. When it’s done, try to leave the keyboard sound on, most cases it will deny any possible unresponsiveness on typing since the software will focus on touching to gather input for sound preparation.

3. You can minimize the system sound to make it barely noticeable if you don’t like it.

4. If you turned off the sound, later found the issue reoccurred, use my previous suggestions: touch accommodation & limit frame rate.

I will reduce the update frequency to weekly since no one seems to complain about malfunction of my recent suggestions. All in all, we just want a NORMAL iPad to use.

Good luck everyone, to your iPad and your life.

Update:

Went to apple store and got another replacement. It was a rainy day, and I couldn’t replicate the touch issue, but still got the new iPad Pro.

good thing is this one works well, so far. I’ll summarise the difference I noticed just as a reference for those who no longer have warranty.

of course, if you are in warranty, ask for a replacement, and don’t hesitate or feel awkward. It’s your right and you WILL eventually get the working one.

for those who don’t have warranty:

  1. It was raining heavily and I did carry my iPad Pro through a humid environment. When I was waiting for the service coming, the iPad Pro was working flawless.
  2. it could be a software problem, but from my experience of using 5 iPad Pro, if it didn’t work, it will always be there, so I lean towards hardware now. However, the diagnose will show all hardware are working correctly. So my guess would be the static electric. The design has a flaw so for some devices, static would cause huge problem. This explains non issue during my waiting. In summary, this might not be a problem that software could solve.
  3. My replacement is not new, the SIM card tray has an obvious flaw so mine is a repaired replacement. For some reason this repair might eliminate the potential issue. So if your replacement is a used/repaired one, you will have a greater chance of getting a no problematic ipad.
  4. No warranty right? Ask apple store to flash the iOS system for you. If it’s the same DFU method, it might not solve anything for you, but worth the try right? “New” replacement I received always pre-installed apps such as iMovie and GarageBand, my own DFU flashed one didn’t have any of that.
  5. this one has iOS 12.1, not 12.1.4. Personally I don’t think it’s the issue, cuz I have had the same issue from iOS 11 to iOS 12, but I will leave it as it is for now. Once updated, I’ll post an update.
  6. Suggestions. Remember, this is Apple’s Fault not yours. If you have warranty, keep asking for a replacement until it works. If not, ask for a fresh iOS install.however, try not to restore your old backup, as that might bring any potential software problem to the new one. Yes I don’t believe it’s the software, but for precision electronics, software bugs could cause hardware issues by manipulating parameters. Last one, leave the ipad in the same room (no direct contact with water) when you shower. The steam shouldn’t trigger the water damage test strip, but might do you a favor. Good luck.
  7. disclaimer, all the above are my experience and assumptions, and may not be the true case. However, this might be your ultimate guide/advice because I have read more than 85% posts/threads that have been addressing this issue.

Your suggestion #6 is insane. Steaming your iPad to fix it... why not just microwave it!

의 답변

So because it was too much to input, I didn’t mention all the details.

My suggestion was not INSANE. I suggested to expose the iPad to higher humidity environment to test the responsiveness, which should be tolerated by its design. Never said to shower with it, but after reading my sentences, I might need to explain a bit more.

DO NOT STEAM YOUR IPAD!

DO NOT EXPOSE YOUR IPAD TO EXTREME HUMID ENVIRONMENT FOR MORE THAN 20 SEC.

but, you can bring your ipad to the shower room after your shower, and use it there to test the responsiveness.

All my suggestions were for those who knew their iPads well and did their research. Not for people who saw my post first. If you don’t think you can handle it, don’t try it. Schedule an appointment at apple store and let them worry.

Goosekeeper, thanks for bringing this to my attention.

There's a TL;DR at the end!

Hello there! I'm the owner of a 12.9" iPad Pro (2nd Gen - 2017). My iPad was too affected by the unresponsive touch problem. I constantly browsed forums for hours after hours trying to find a solution. Different things worked for different people. Some of them include:

  • Turning off blue-tooth
  • Turning off analytics
  • Turning off background refresh
  • Turning off widgets

Finally some people just gave up the iPad and got a replacement.

However, in a forum, one person suggested to remove the BACKCOVER of the iPad.

I soon realized that the iPad was working fine UNTIL i put on the back-cover. I am not being biased against the use of it and that's the reason I won't be mentioning its name here. I observed that it had 4-6 very strong magnets. A thought struck my mind - maybe it was the magnets that were interfering with its accelerometer.

So I removed its back-cover.

The funny thing is that it didn't just go away. It took 3-4 days to completely heal. Every day, the problem was gone by 30%, until today, I used my iPad for 10 hours straight. In different angles, smudging the screen with oils and dirt(yeah). using it in different orientations. BUT NO SIGN OF ANY UNRESPONSIVE TOUCH.

So, I don't think it will work for everybody but give it a try whoever has a back-cover on their iPad and is suffering from this problem.

Also, I would like to thank all the people who kept this post going and helping out those people suffering from this problem. I especially wanted to return the favor by giving my own solution. Again, Thank you!

TL;DR: Remove the back-cover (especially if it contains lots of magnets)

의 답변

This is very bad advice. If you remove the back cover the waranty will become invalidated (if it is still in warranty). I advise you do not try to remove the back cover. The screen might easly break.

의 답변

I believe “back cover” refers to a case, one which attaches to the iPad via magnets—Apple’s covers for example.

The idea is that there is some interference caused by having the iPads embedded magnets interact with a magnetic case/cover.

He’s not suggesting that you tare off the aluminum casing.

I reported mine at the Genius Bar last week. They did consider it an issue. The guy who helped me felt that it was most likely software related, due to it starting right after the last iOS update (12.1.4). He suggested two options:

1) report it to the technicians who log it. The more common the issue is for users, the more likely it’ll be addressed sooner. Wait for the next iOS update to see if this issue is specifically addressed. If the issue is not addressed and handled within a month or so, by means of update, bring in for replacement

2) replace the iPad on the spot.

I opted for for #1

also: DO NOT steam your iPad by bringing it in the bathroom with you while you shower, as recommended above. Terrible advice. Reckless, if not willfully destructive. You will likely water-damage your device, therefor voiding any warranty or coverage.

Mine does have it and it seems to be both hardware and software related, bluetooth for me doesn’t seem to do anything, but it does happen more often when charging, also it happens a lot more often when it is hot/stressed like in games like pubg mobile with balanced/extreme or smooth/extreme with AA enabled.

iOS 12.2 seems to help a bit, but I haven’t stressed it much yet so it remains to be seen.

Also if the display locks up instead of turning the screen off and on again you can sometimes just use 3-5 fingers and drag around the screen and it unfreezes the screen.

Maybe some type of software detection of the underlying problem and automatic touch ic reset will help?

They are probably not working on it right now if the new iPads(Pro 2018/New Air/Mini) doesn’t have this problem too so if anyone have workarounds or some way to quickly unfreeze the screen please just share it here and if someone up there(first comments) can compile it will be appreciated thx!

Edit: Mine still is having problem on iOS 12.2 , just much much less frequentlly.

Also my mom’s 1 inch-bent-off-the-table-when-laying-flat freaky looking iPad doesn’t seem to have any problem at all so….

Also btw the screen and glass didn’t break, it’s super flexible for some reason, and it still works to this day even after bending it back and it has no sign of bendage now so that iPad is super magical…

I’ve not had any trouble with mine for a little over a week now. I’ve been using it the same way in the same place and everything is working properly. It does start to act up on occasion and I have a little bottle of anti-static spray That you spritz on the front of your shirt in your hand and the problem goes away. I believe the issue is static electricity. From what I’ve read of users with problems, most are using them in their lap. (You mentioned laying in bed). When you’re arms and the iPad are touching the same cloth is where I notice the problem, I believe our fingers are becoming static neutral. If you don’t want to get and use static spray, next time it happens hold the iPad up in the air with one hand take the other hand and lightly rub around the metal perimeter of the iPad with the other hand. And then start to use it again and see if that works.

I went into the Apple Store in my City and spoke to a lady from the Genius Bar showed her the problem by demonstration. I was not happy with that warranty so phoned Apple explained my point of veiwband was told I would get a full year warranty as it would be a new item first user. I collect it tomorrow.

I am hoping the new iPad Pro Cellular 12.9 2nd generation 500Gb that is to replace the faulty 8 months old iPad Pro will not have the same excruciating problem. It could be static as somebody has suggested. I have had a few shocks off of this iPad and tried grounding myself.

The problem it definitely linked to touching the outer rear casing and the screen surround when holding the iPad or if the touchscreen becomes unresponsive when on a flat surface a change of position can bring it back to life. Other times a restart does the job but not every time .

Using the touch screen makes every job a long uncertain chore. I am thinking of selling the replacement and getting a 10 inch Pro. I was a fool to change to the 12.9“as it is nowhere near as good as the 10” in usability and comfort. It is too heavy.

I have the 256gm cellular 2nd generation. It had the problem and got a replacement which has never missed a beat for almost a month now. My backup from the previous iPad is uploaded in the new and no problems whatsoever (so software related problems are rather ruled out).

I think that the larger iPads are more prone to bending (mine was found to be slightly bent - by a minuscule amount - even though it looked brand new after 6-7 months of usage) and, hence, screen unresponsiveness. The 12.9 is the right size for me and I’m delighted that in the end I got what I paid for.

Another thing that worked for my friend is turning the iPad off for a couple of hours. This COMPLETELY solved her problem. But you need to keep the iPad off when charging or else it would come back! Try experimenting with this

Yep I got something like that before, not anymore for a replacement but only time will tell.

Didn’t work for me :( what worked is putting iPad Pro in a very thick plastic case that completely covers the back, only one case worked that way out of 5 I tried.

Apple reeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaally has to fix it on their side. My next tablet definitely won’t be iPad. I’m trying Surface right now, works pretty cool.
