My iphone 3g was recently dropped and when I powered back it on, it went white. Now it is just black. From time to time when I charge it, the screen will come up with white lines and I can just make out the apple logo. What have I done to my phone?

Looks like you broke the LCD the digitizer might have been damaged as well. The good news is that it appears to still power up so the logic board might still be in good shape. Try holding down the home and power button at the same time to see what happens.

Can iTunes recognize it?
I'd suggest opening it up, and reconnecting the lcd/display connectors to make sure they are still securely making contact.
