WD My Passport Ultra 2TB not showing in MacBook Finder

I have a WD 2TB My Passport external drive. I used it on my Macbook a month ago and it worked fine. I tried to use it again today but it does not show in my Devices on Finder anymore.

What I observed:

The light is on and it is blinking. It is vibrating very lightly, like it always does. There is no unusual noise.

What I have done so far:

I plugged it on another Macbook, but it did not show there either.

I tried using a different usb cable and it still did not show in my Finder.

What could possibly be the problem? How do I know if my files are still there? How can I troubleshoot? Where can I have it repaired?

External Disk box is already checked, unfortunately. I failed to mention in my report that I tried plugging another external drive and that showed up in Finder.

Verdict: my WD is corrupted. How this happened is beyond me. I am more urgently concerned about my peace of mind to find that my files are still there, so I did not return or demand for repair anymore as that entire process would be more agonizing. I had it opened by a colleague and, thankfully, all my files are intact. I had them transferred to a new WD drive that was previously given to me as a gift. I doubt I will be purchasing another WD in the near future. I'm on the lookout for other brand options. Recommendations are most welcome!

Thanks to those who replied. Truly appreciate your time and effort.

This is a possibility: From the desktop go under Finder to Preferences and make sure the box is checked to show external disks.

How to access the files on the WD Passport?

I had this same problem and concluded that the drive had crashed or data was corrupted. However, it had been warm and the drive had been plugged in for a while. I tried it in a Windows PC and then later again in my Mac, but still didn't work.

Finally, I put it in the refrigerator and then plugged it in to another Mac and I was able to read it and extract the files I wanted.

Not sure if cooling it down was the answer, but this has also worked for me in the past with other drives.

The defect is probably in the WD My Passport Ultra controller. These all in one drive and controllers from WD, Seagate, etc. are notorious for "crapping out".

Often they have controllers that have the USB and SATA interfaces in one circuit board so if they die, both the drive and the circuit board, are useless.

Better to buy a seperate standard SATA drive and an external USB enclosure. If you shop carefully you get a USB 3.1 Gen 2 enclosure/case with file transfer rates of up to 10 Gbps - twice the speed of USB 3.0 (USB 3.1 Gen 1)

If either one fails it is very simple to replace. If the enclosure fails the drive can be hooked up to any SATA port and data recovered. Having said this I have never had any of these external enclosures fail over many, many years, and I'm including old IDE ones as well.

BUT IFIXIT is filled with people having these proprietary (trademark or branded) ones fail. Hey people, the component ones are easy to setup. Often no screws are even needed. My favourite one is waterproof and you just click the case open, plug in the drive, click it shut and away you go. Easy peasy!

Which macOS are you using? Is it High Sierra? Some WD have issues with the new macOS.

But, are you able to see the WD in the Disk Utility?

Yes, macOS Sierra 10.12.6. I have not upgraded yet as I wanted to back up my files first. WD is not showing in Disk Utility.
