@jeth it is not the size of the case! That could be resolved by using a backplate from an iPod 5th gen thick, the issue here is that your 5th gen Video does not read the 7th gen Hard Drive at all. They are not interchangeable which has nothing to do with it's thickness.

Opps! My bad I didn't notice the generation difference! Very true very different interface between these drives. Even still is finding a bigger back and the correct drive worth it Vs just making the big jump to a SSD setup? I did it and boy it's so much better!

Absolutely worth it to me. No issues with syncing or any other compatibility issue and am running a 240GB hard drive in mine.

Question at hand is if the 7th gen will fit in a 5.5gen and the answer is still no. Not for reasons of size but compatibility

@oldturkey03 - Its really both as the bigger HD drive are also higher in height as well.

@danj so is it not about the digital compatibility but purely because of the physical size?

No! Its both! The first is as OT stated the drives use different interfaces between the series, the second is the size.

The bigger drive has more platters which translates into height. So the stainless case needs to be slightly thicker to compensate for the bigger drive. Which is why I was aiming to just go to the SSD solution as the drive elements will be shallower and the drive won't skip (drag) when you bounce as you exercise.

Don't understand most of the posted answers as the OP asked if a gen 7 (thin) hdd can be used in a gen 5.5 (thick) Ipod. I have successfully done exactly that. I do recall that the gen 5.5 may not have initially recognized the full gen 7 160gb hdd size - 128 if I recall correctly. Cheers!

Went back and reread prior posts it made me think there is a possibility that my hdd swap was into a gen 6 ipod not a gen 5.5. Too long ago to be certain - sorry!

Sadly the case depth is too shallow. How about making the big jump into a SSD drive config. Here’s one offering: iFlash iPod Adapters

@oldturkey03 I was actually thinking about upgrading the gen 7 with iflash and the put the gen7 160gb thin hard disk into the gen 5.5. But how come i-flash is compatible with both gen 5.5 and 7 but gen 7 hard disk isn’t compatible with gen 5.5?

@jeth - As for why the SSD solution works across both series is the logic within the card can route the signal to a PATA to SATA conversion for the older gen iPod.
