How do I locate the diagnotic led lights on an Intel 17"?

I'm trying to determine why the computer won't power up and if I need to replace the logic board. This is a 1.83 GHz Core Duo machine.

I bought it in March of 06 so it must be one that doesn't have any. The local Mac shop says that I need to replace the logic board. Is there a quick way to verify that without the LED's?

How about telling us the symptoms?

It powers up but the screen remains black. I tried booting from the system disk but that didn't work and the disk is still in the drive.

I don;t get a startup tone and no tone when I hold the option, command, and P & R keys. Should I continue with the other tests? Many thanks for your help.

Not good. Let's check the RAM. Remove both sticks if you have two and reseat one at a time in each of the slots trying to start after each change. Do you have a multimeter?

The diagnostic lights should be just to the right of the RAM socket. Some of the early Intel iMacs did not have diagnostic LEDs

Do you get a startup chime? Unplug all periferals and the keyboard and power cord, hold down the start button for 10 seconds. Next zap the PRAM, start up holding down the option, command, P & R keys and wait till it tones three times. Hook it up to an external monitor and boot. This will tell us if the problem is in the video area. Next hook it up to another Mac via a firewire cable holding down the "T" key and see if the drive can be repaired using disk utilities from the other machine.

To test the power supply go to step 21, disconnect the plug and test the output. iMac Intel 17" Power Supply Replacement

Test your PRAM battery. Try starting up from your system installation disk by inserting the disk and restarting holding down the "C" key. Go to the second screen pull down menu to Utilities -> Disk utility, select your drive on the left and repair the drive till it runs clear. Now try to start up. You may have to hook up an external monitor to do this.

Another option: Start it up in Target mode by holding down the "T" key. You need to be connected to another Mac via a Firewire cable to do this. The hard drive icon should appear on the monitor of the second mac. You can then run disk utilities on it.
