Using headphones in cold weather causes them to shutdown completely.

My Solo wireless have been working great. I use them while walking my dog for 2-3 hrs per day and the charge last about 2 weeks. This was true until now! Since the weather has cooled off (in the 20s) my headset shuts down about an hour into the walk. I get a chime then nothing, no lights , sound nothing, I cannot turn them back on they are just dead! When I get home and let them warm up for an hour or so, I can turn them on and they show full charge! Must be the cold because I can use them inside without them shutting down. Is this normal?

Same problem with mine. I even put a hat over my beats solo 3’s and they still shut down in cold weather.

I'm going through this now and I believe the issue is a recently manufactured problem as it didn't exist previously.

Some context: I got a pair of the Beats Studio Wireless (v.1) in '13/'14 and used them every single day right up until a month ago when I got The Studio 3 wireless. I used the original set indoors and out, through some of the coldest weather Canada has to offer (walking home for 35-40 minutes in -30C and never once did they shut off.

The new set (Studio Wireless 3) shut off every time the weather is below -0C. I have contacted Apple back and forth for the last month and they have now told me this is "expected behaviour" and won't be replacing or repairing them, much to my disappointment. To make matters worse, they swapped out a set rather than returning my purchased set and now I cannot return them.

I highly recommend not using Apple/Beats customer service until the last resort is needed.

So, I have the same cold weather problem, so do we recommend to northern countries not tu buy Beats ?

I was not happy to find that out..

The salesperson at the Source in Montreal said she really liked her headphones , but never spoke about the cold.

Now , I must wait for spring to use the headphones as I do not use them in my home as I have a music stereo.

Real Turn OFF

Hey! Same problem here :( so disappointed. I strongly feels it should be mentioned in the package or something... I'll maybe buy a cable to use them directly with the phone, I think this should partially fix the problem as they are no longer using the battery; but I mean, this is not what I paid for. Again... so disappointed :(

Mine were still under warranty, spoke to Apple for an hour, and they said the problem was written as "expected" in coldish weather, but this issue is in a gray area, since they won't tell you what is "cold". Mine conks out at even +2, 3 degrees, but of course they can't fix it as it works when it is indoors! Basically, it is a fault in that a battery shouldn't behave like this as other headphones don't have that issue ,but they kept telling me it's a "gray area". So, when they deem something in the "gray area', ultimately, it is the consumer's problem, not theirs.

Batteries do not like cold weather ( electrons don't like to move), especially if there are reaching their end-of-life. How old the headphones?

I have tried my Beats with my iPhone8 for two runs in 20-degree weather. I got about .2 miles and they disconnected. I reconnected them, run another 200 yards and they disconnected. I reconnected them, ran 200 yards and the same thing happened. They never behaved this way in warmer temps, so there must be a correlation. So frustrating.

That was my conclusion too. 20 degrees seems to be the point of failure! I have since been keeping a hoodie on over the headphones and that seems to work for me.

@bearflag7 ""Batteries do not like cold weather" Neither do humans! both are true! I would reccomend charging it for 24 hours and see if the issue persists at room temperature after a full charge.

I do not disagree about charging overnight, only after a full rundown of the batteries till headphones shutdown. But I think he will have to put the headphones in the refrigerator to test them. The batteries internal resistance, goes up due too "Age"and cold. I have done work in ths area designing and testing handheld medical equipment.

From the body of the question above "When I get home and let them warm up for an hour or so, I can turn them on and they show full charge! " https://www.ifixit.com/User/746228/dalee...

I was not saying discharge them fully.

I have a pair of jbl Walmart headphones I got for 60 bucks. They'll work all day long in - 20 degree weather. I upgraded (or so I thought) to beats studio 3. Sure, they sound great and bla bla bla but they don't work in the cold.. Initially their finger for like 20 minutes. Restart them and 5 minutes. Restart them and 2 minutes. So frustrating when they cost what they do..

I spent an hour with Apple and they said it was "Expected Behavior" even though I said it was PLUS 2,+ 3 degrees when I went out with them. They said it was a gray area and they weren't going to pay attention to a few degrees!! A few degrees?!?! Above zero is not overly cold! They also said they envisioned the Beats more like the way they were to be used, kinda like a studio setting!! OMG, now ridiculous.

As the Battery University puts it, “The performance of all batteries drops drastically at low temperatures”! Depending on whether the headphones are using rechargeable NiCd (older ones probably) or lithium-ion (newer), you’ll get different outcomes in cold weather.

The issue with newer devices using lithium-ion batteries is that they always have a safety low-voltage cut off built in to prevent permanent damage to the batteries. When that happens, the device shuts down.

Low temperatures can create situations where it causes the lithium-ion battery pack to dip below the cut-off temperature when cold, thus prematurely cutting off power to the device. Devices running on NiCd don’t have this cutoff built in, and will probably trickle power and keep working longer in cold situations.

I am glad to read this blog to confirm I am not going crazy! I have the same issues in the cold and this is absolutely ridiculous. Why would you spend $300 on headphones that cannot perform to wear outside in the cold

If you want , that your Beats headphones not turn off , just put on a hood , this is my advice ;)

I have, it doesn't work even in as warm as -0.

The issue is that the sensor is way to sensitive and on the outside of the set, so while a hood may keep your head relatively warm, the outer edges of your hood will still trip the sensor.

My son wore two hats plus a hood and they still shut down. :(

My Studio 3 headphones shut off in hot and cold temperatures. I got them this past Christmas, and they shut off everytime I go out to shovel the snow in my driveway up here in Toronto, Canada, under both a toque and hood. I thought this only applied in cold weather, but What's worse, is that my wife and I recently took a trip to Hawaii. And while we were sitting on the beach with the sun bearing down on us, my beats headphones did it again. They cut out after being on the beach only 30-45 minutes, and wouldn't let me turn them on or off. When we got back to the hotel room, and let them cool down, the battery still had plenty of charge, and they started working again. This is just ridiculous! These headphones are such a waste of money!

I hear you. The only solution I have running in cold weather is to tuck them into my running jacket.

There is a thermal sensor in these headphones that deliberately shuts them down when that sensor hits 0˚C

If the headset shuts down in warm weather with a significant charge, that’s evidence of a separate problem

I’ve got a collection of Beats headphones that Apple has given me for free (I would never buy them) and they all have exactly the same behaviour. Even a wind at +5˚C will shut them down if the humidity is high.

It’s a common trait among wireless headsets to auto-shutdown in cold weather no matter the brand. Lithium polymer batteries truly do suck below zero.

I think the real crime with the Beats Studio 3 headset is that they refuse to run off of the analogue audio cable if they lack a power source, since the headphone jack is actually line-level and any amplified signal is attenuated to line RMS.
