I’ve looked at some online info and we pulled the mixer apart. It is knocking but still turns. The sound is coming from the gears. I am assuming it is the worm gear but everything looks ok. Do I replace the whole worm gear or could it just be a bushing?!? Could it be something else?

How much "play" is in the worm gear or in the drive gear? (vertical or horizontal movement - normally with gears it should be minimal as they should turn with virtually no movement on their rotational axis. The gear shafts should be held in position)
If either is loose that's where the knocking sound may come from
