Why does my volume say headphones are plugged in but they aren't?

I shut down my computer only to come back that the volume on it doesn't work and it says that there are headphones plugged in but aren't... any suggestions on how to fix it?

Hi @benedictslegs ,

Were there headphones plugged in when you shut the laptop down?

Have you tried plugging in and unplugging headphones to:

a) see if they work from the jack.

b) that the problems resolves itself when you remove them.

If the problem is still there then the headphone jack may be faulty and it needs to be replaced.

Fortunately it is mounted on a separate module board so replacing it should be relatively easy.

Here is a link to the ifixit HP Chromebook 11-v011dx Battery Replacement guide. It shows how to open the laptop so that access to the USB/ headphone jack is possible. By Step.4 in the guide the module can be accessed.

Here is an image, taken from the guide to show you where it is located.

It is advisable whenever repairing electronic equipment that the power is disconnected so as to prevent any problems occurring if you happen to accidentally "slip" when using tools. (Problems from electrical damage that is, mechanical damage is another matter) Since the motherboard still has power connected to it (even though the laptop is switched off) I suggest that you disconnect the battery from the motherboard before commencing any work on the headphone module. You needn't remove the battery, just disconnect it. Don't forget to reconnect it after you have finished the repair and are about to close the laptop.

Here is a link to just one supplier of the part.

It is not a recommendation to use them. It is shown to give an idea of the cost of the part. There may be other suppliers online that suit you better. Just search for HP Chromebook 11 G5, 11-V011DX USB & Audio Jack pcb to get results.

If you find the repair too daunting a task, I suggest that you contact a reputable, professional laptop repair service and ask for a quote for a repair.

Hopefully this is of some help.

I had this problem too. Try messing around with audio settings.

look in your headphone jack also click on the headphone symbol (audio settings) and change your output to speaker so you can still hear off your computer. If there is something in your headphone jack you have to get it out or you can use bluetooth headphones instead
