How to reposition or replace USB-C that has horrible connectivity

I recently sent my HP Spectre for repair. They replaced the motherboard and fixed the overheating problem, but now the USB-C ports are not working.

I only have two USB-C ports on the side. One is not working at all, and the other needs a specific angle to allow for charging.

I don't want to send my computer away again, is there any way to open the laptop and push out the USB-C port a bit? I feel like the USB port is not working due to bad positioning.

Hi @tdunc15 ,

If the laptop is still under warranty or repair guarantee, do not open it yourself, as you will void the warranty / guarantee.

As mentioned above, the USB-C ports are mounted on the motherboard. If they have been damaged during the course of the repair they should be fixed by the repairer.

The motherboard is positioned in the base so it would be unusual for it not to be fitted correctly. So something may have happened to the ports.

Here is a link to the service manual for your laptop, taken from this webpage.

It details the necessary pre-requisite steps and then the procedure to remove the systemboard if you want to do this, but I recommend that in this case you don't.

@jayeff, I agree with your answer, except for voiding the warranty. See this link: https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/press-re...

Hi @tdunc15 ,

That is great if you are in the USA but it might not apply in other countries and we don't know where the OP lives. ;-)

Cheers.

The link above provides a step-by-step teardown of your laptop. At step 10, he gets to the motherboard. I would double check to make sure the repair shop installed the motherboard correctly, that it is aligned on the support screws properly. The USB-C ports themselves are soldered to the motherboard, so you won't be able to move them independently, so your best shot is to ensure the motherboard is mounted to the case correctly.

Hi Tim

If the motherboard cannot be adjusted, (does not improve the connectivity of the USB), the only thing that could be done is to return it to HP and get it fixed right?

I tend to say yes. If you find no alignment issues (which may cause a grounding issue that is causing the USB connectivity problem), then I would tend to think you got a bad motherboard. Then, you should send it back to HP to fix their botched repair, since you already paid for it.

But let's not get ahead of ourselves. Follow the teardown, and see how it looks. Take pictures. You can post the pictures following these instructions 기존 질문에 이미지 추가하기, and maybe we can figure something out.
