Here’s answer -

If you don’t have ads - may be different list items for with adds…

home (house) top left

Menu top right 3 dots

2nd from bottom (settings)

look for the globe - 5th down list

first one in list is language

That should be it

this took me hours to figure after my 4 year old swiped my new kindle and used it as a phone

If they change the order play around until you find the globe - then try every item in that list until get language.

Once you get to settings and language, every option is AGAIN written only in Chinese! You have to pick the correct one before you can set the language. this can be done only by guessing and trial and error, which is what you have to do. It needs to not be so easy to accidentally set the language in the first place. It shouldn't be possible to do it by accidentally swiping something (or however it even happened) when you first take the Kindle out of the box. Especially, you should need to go through multiple menus and multiple buttons before you can set the language to one with a completely different alphabet. It shouldn't be "accidental."

THANK YOU!!!! You were the only one who seemed to realize that the instructions had also changed to Chinese, so we needed the step-by-step explanation with numerical order and what pictures to look for. You saved my sanity!

Thanks! Worked perfectly for me.

Thank you. Worked for me too appreciate the simplicity

Older versions of Kindle: After clicking on settings icon then click the ‘World’ icon. From the next screen click the first item in the list. From there you will be taken to the language page. Click the dropdown arrow and choose English…third from the top.

On newer versions of Kindle without categorized menu: Click on settings icon then scroll to the bottom. Click the icon 3rd from the bottom. This icon resembles 3 sliding bars. On the next screen click the first item in the list. On the following screen click the dropdown arrow and choose English…fourth one from the top.

I posted this is a comment on someone else’s post, but in case anyone else is trying to find out how to do this and doesn’t read each post… here it is as a main post.

Once you get to settings and language, you still haven’t finished going through the maze— every additional option is AGAIN written only in Chinese! You have to pick the correct one before you can set the language. This can be done only by guessing and trial and error. I don’t know who Amazon thinks has the time for this. It could be solved by not making it so easy to accidentally set the wrong language in the first place. It shouldn't be possible to do it by accidentally swiping one thing (or however it even happened) when you first take the Kindle out of the box. Especially, the user should need to go through multiple menus and multiple buttons before you can set the language to one with a completely different alphabet. It shouldn't be so hard to avoid initially doing this by accident. Thirty seconds extra of thinking about usability on the engineers’ part would have kept this problem from ever coming up. So why didn’t they… why am I even asking why Amazon would have spent thirty seconds thinking about the user’s experience!!

Hi,

I just had this happen to me. I bought a refurbished kindle paperwhite from Woot and when I started it up, it was in Chinese. I found a simple solution (if you have an iphone), use the google translate app, in camera mode, and point it at the screen. I could navigate through the settings to switch the language.

Cheers,

Jim

I used the auto translate function in google on my phone. It 'took' a picture of the kindle screen and translated everything to english, so I could make the correct selections in the menus.
