Planning to repurpose the display, can I repurpose the speakers too?

My 2013 27” iMac has served me well, but is starting to show its age. I’m planning on disassembling it and selling the internals, but intend to keep the chassis and screen to create a DIY external display using a tutorial I found. However, this got me wondering whether or not I could do the same thing with the speakers. Does anyone have any experience with this? Any insight is greatly appreciated!

EDIT: 8/22/18

Adding some of the resources I’ve found for performing this mod with the screen alone. This is not a complete list.

The part number for the 2013 27" iMac display is LM270WQ1, and can have the part number 661-7169 or 661-7885. Models for sale online often have an" (SD) (F1)" after the model number. Displays on eBay list different designations such as (SD) (E3). I obviously won't know which one I have until i open my machine, but this will clearly affect which controller I need, as when I search for LM270WQ1 controller on eBay, various models appear with different designations.

What kit did you find?

Keep in mind this series uses iDP (eDP) signaling from the LCD display.

@danj OK, I uploaded the photos I took. See link on my update. I found it on eBay but will have to search later for the supplier, he had several different ones for iMacs and MBP.

@kazoodac

there is no update.....just post the images to your question. Use this guide 기존 질문에 이미지 추가하기 for that. What is the exact number from your label on the LCD panel as well as what is it that you want to do with the speakers? You will need some sort of amp to drive them but that will depend on what your want your display to connect to

I've updated the original question with some of the resources I've found for this project. This is just as much for my benefit as it is for others who may be looking to attempt this project.

@danj What consequences or road blocks would Display Port signaling have for the mod? The controllers I've seen for this display appear to have HDMI input. Would that cause a conflict?

@mayer The link you posted seems like it's inviting me to collaborate on an incomplete guide. Let me know if I'm missing something. Thanks for posting the photos though!

@oldturkey03 I don't know the exact model number yet, as I haven't fully committed to the project and opened up the computer. However, I do know the display product ID, and added it to the post. A variety of controllers for different designations exist on eBay. As for the speakers, I'd love to keep them in the housing with the display! While I expect having one cable supply both Audio and Video would be too complex, I'd still be thrilled with a separate optical or 3.5mm.

@oldturkey03 Did you look at what I used? The PSU and video board come as a kit.

I’ve done it on a 24” iMac. You do get a working displayed it’s neat looking but the value is probably about $100.

I wouldn’t even think about it on a 2013 model, which is far more valuable as a working unit.
