Replace stock RAM of 2x2Gb with 4x4Gb

I am wondering if I will remove the stock ram of my iMac and buy 2 additional 2x4Gb RAM here @ iFixit will my machine still run? The reason why I asked this is because when I tried to install my 2x4Gb only without the stock RAM, my machine don’t start. I would like to run the machine under 16Gb instead of 12Gb as my current RAM installed.

Not sure I follow what your problem is. You can use both 2 MB & 4 MB memory modules in your system. Here’s the Apple T/N which you should review Install memory in an iMac Do make sure you get the correct memory modules 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM

댓글 3개:

This machine has 4 RAM slots. Just add the two 4s.

RAM Type: PC3-10600 DDR3 Min. RAM Speed: 1333 MHz

Details: Supports 1333 MHz PC3-10600 DDR3 SO-DIMMs (204-pin).

Sorry to confuse you both.

Yes, my iMac can use both.

Scenario:

iMac comes with stock of 4Gb RAM and that was 2x2Gb. Correct?

So I purchased additional 2 more RAMs and those were 4Gb each stick. So my iMac runs 12Gb of RAM (2gb stock + 8gb generic).

Problem:

I tried to use the 4Gb RAM alone (without the stock RAM), and iMac DO NOT boot up correctly. Until I put back again the stock 2Gb RAM and it boot up normal again.

My Case:

I am wondering and worried, if I purchase 2 pcs of 4Gb RAM here at iFixit to replace my iMac stock 2Gb RAM, will it run without my previous issue? The reason of that is I wanted to maximize my RAM to 16Gb instead of 12Gb only.

I think you got some bad RAM modules. As long as they are to spec you should have any problems using either set or using them together. But you do need to make sure you keep the modules within the bank and make sure you've fully seated them in.
