Looking to upgrade HDD to SSD on mid 2012 MacBook Pro

I have a mid-2012 MacBook Pro 15” non retina. It currently has a 2.3 GHz i7 CPU, 16GB of RAM, with 750 HDD.

Its been reliable until now, editing with large video files with FCPX. With all the plug-ins, it takes forever to export. My hard drive is almost filled up, so I have all my video files on an external, Lacie rugged 4TB.

The write/read speed off the Lacie hard drives is around 125/MB’s using a Thunderbolt connection and has made my MacBook super hot. I think the read and write speed is slow, when processing large files at 125/MB’s causing my laptop to be hot!

Right now, I’m looking to upgrade my 750 HDD to Samsung EVO 4TB SSD and plan to discontinue using the external drive and adding all my video files onto the SSD.

Will the Samsung EVO 4TB SSD work?

I love the extra space from my external, so having a large SSD makes more sense to me. All my externals will be used as storage/backup only and edit straght through the SSD.

Obviously you are a serious Mac user. This drive should work fine for you.

I would also max the RAM out.

As for the battery, download a run Coconut Battery and post your results and we may be able to give you better advice.

It’s so important on how you set this drive up if you are going to High Sierra because of the new APSF formatting on SSD drives, so let us know.

My ram is already at 16gig, not sure if I can up it to 32? Maybe a bit of overkill

Maxes out at 16GB,

You may want to clean your heatsink and its fins as well as your fan blades of dust buildup. I would also recommend cleaning and applying a new coat of thermal paste given your system is running hot. If you can find a 2.7 GHz i7 board you may want to jump to it given what you are processing. Otherwise you may need to consider getting a desktop system, which has better thermal cooling.
