Displays nothing but static after repair.

The digitizer on the iPad was completely shattered, but the LCD and everything else was fully functional. Everything came off easily, I had no issue with pulling on any of the components.

After I attached the new display, I made sure to test it before applying the adhesive. All the iPad would display was this static. I repeatedly removed the display, making sure to check the connections and clean them with 91% alcohol. No matter how many times I tried resetting, cleaning or re-seating the display, it would only ever give me the same static.

The only other time I’ve seen an LCD look like this, was because it was damaged. The box the new display came in was undamaged, and the display looks pristine. So I assumed that it might’ve had a defect and I requested a replacement.

Fast forward to today, and the new display is giving me the exact same static as the first one. I have repeatedly done the same, reset the iPad, cleaned the connections and thoroughly examined the connectors under magnification for damage. No matter what I try nothing seems to change, and I can’t spot even the slightest damage to any of the connectors.

Now I’m certain it’s not a defective part, as both screens have been from iFixit. I know the iPad is booting correctly, as after it boots I’m able to power it down normally with the slide to power off.

I have fixed quite a few iPads and I’ve never had a problem like this before, is there anything I’m over looking? I’ve looked over the other topics and I haven’t found anything exactly like this one, and none of the fixes they had worked for me.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried re-installing, or at least connecting, the original display? That would confirm if the issue is display or logic board related.

If the issue is logic board related, then closely inspect the connectors and the surrounding components. Look for damaged pins or missing or dislodged components. The screen you see shows that the LCD is being driven but the data is scrambled. That could be caused by missing filters on the data lines or something more severe at the CPU level.

Yes I have, but the results are not very conclusive. The screen is a solid white color with no distortion, except for black spots running along the biggest cracks in the digitizer. So it must have got damaged along those cracks during removal, but it doesn’t have the same static, just a solid white color.

A colleague of mine who works more with computers mentioned it looks like GPU artifacting, and suggested I try reflowing the motherboard, does this sound reasonable?

No, do not reflow an iPad logic board.

The critical IC's are underfilled and that isn't conducive to reflowing. What happens when you heat the board is that the solder melts and expands. Because the IC is constrained by the underfill, the solder has nothing to expand into and consequently can blow out or bridge with adjacent balls, essentially killing the board.

I find it odd that the original screen doesn't show the same symptoms but getting two separate screens with the same issue is pretty conclusive. Still, the only way to know for certain is to have access to known-good parts and in this case, with the high cost of these replacement screen, it's pretty hard to do.

Have you inspected, under magnification, the area surrounding the connectors?

Thank you, I’m glad I asked before trying that.

I did thoroughly inspect all the connectors under magnification.

I have some good news to report though, I got it working finally! I got permission and all the information I needed from the client to make a back up on iTunes. After I made the back up, I did a full wipe, restore and update and the problem seems to have resolved. I don’t know exactly what caused it to begin with, but whatever it was it must’ve been software related. The screen has a very, very faint purple tint, but it’s almost not even noticeable. I wish I could identify exactly what happened, but that’s all I’ve got.
