Hi @davidm71 ,

Here’s a link to a video that shows how to remove the motherboard in the laptop to gain access to the DC-In jack.

You will need soldering expertise and tools to remove/replace the part.

Replacement parts are available online. Just search for Asus UX31A DC-In jack part to get results for suppliers.

Thank you for posting that link to that video. Seems like a big operation. I’m willing to attempt to repair it though. Also I found the part but I also need back panel case screws as they all fell out and are lost. Any idea where they sell those?

Thanks

Hi @davidm71 ,

They are available online - although the two suppliers I found say currently sold out.

Just search for "Asus Ux31a screws" - you may have better luck.

Here's a link (select your 'model' from the drop down box and then click on "screws") which lists all the parts for the laptop - it gives the part numbers which may also help in your search. , if you know which screw it actually is as there are 11 different ones for the laptop. ;-)

Well I was finally able to fix it though I had issues along the way. I ordered the new DC jack from ebay and completely disasembled the laptop. The most difficult part was removing the old connector. No matter how much heat I applied with a soldering iron I couldnt get it out. It felt like I waa pulling a tooth and I’m a dentist to boot! So there were bits of the metal leads left on the mounting area. I had to use my dental drill to open up the holes. Finally was able to seat the new DC jack in place but soldering was difficult but I finally managed. Reassembled every thing and now it turns on but have one small little issue in that 1 out of like 8 keys on the keyboard dont work. Maybe I need to reseat the keyboard cable or wipe down the leads?

thanks

Hi @davidm71 ,

Try re-seating the keyboard cable and check if that works.

Hopefully you'd disconnected the laptop battery while you were doing the DC-In jack repair or any other work inside the laptop. If not perhaps you may have accidentally "slipped" with some tools and caused the problem. With the battery connected, the motherboard is effectively still "live" i.e. there is power still available at various sections of the motherboard even though the laptop is turned off. The power button is not a power isolating button, like an on/off switch. ;-)

Try a USB keyboard and see if that works OK.
