Car Only Starts when I Bypass the Starter Fuse

Car Only Starts when I Bypass the Starter Fuse

My car is a 2005 Scion tC (they didn’t have that option when I made the forum.) It does not crank when I turn the key. If I hook up jumper cables same thing. I went through tests to see what it may be. I removed the starter relay/fuse from the fuse box. I was able to put to wires in the fuse “plug” to bypass the starter relay/fuse and the car starts. I went ahead and got a new fuse/relay and when I put it in, the same thing happens. Doesn’t crank at all. I have a multimeter to test different wire connections. I am trying to figure out what the problem is. I think it is the ignition switch or the park/neutral safety switch. I am not sure if that is right or even how to test that. I am adding a picture of someone bypassing the starter relay/fuse for a Scion xD

This is my fuse box, it is slightly different than the diagram you shared.

This image is a picture of how I can get the car to turn over and start. Like I said the fuse isn’t the issue (tested with a new one). That is however where the starter fuse is located.

This is an automatic transmission. With that being said, which contacts should I jump to test the neutral switch?

I tried these three combos for grounding the wires. I had no luck

Something to note, I was able to get the car to try and start (the battery has been sitting and needs charged) by a combination of grounding the relay fuse as well as the first picture of me grounding the NSS connection. Pictures showing that

I only say that because that makes me assume the way I grounded the NSS worked that time because when I ground the Starter Relay it did start to work (like it does w/ the NSS normally.)

With all that being said what else could be the issue? It seems to me that something is not relaying the message to the starter relay properly so it does not try to run (like I said I had tried a brand new starter relay and that didn’t change anything). What are your thoughts? @travisjfox @oldturkey03

Hey, were you able to figure it out? Im having the same issue. I was able to start it by bypassing the starter relay the same as you but it wouldn't let me take the car out of park. Any ideas?

@zsatt this is what your 2005 tC fuse box should look like.

To test your neutral switch (P1 for AT or C5 for MT) just apply the jumpers on the contacts of those switches. As you can see on the wiring diagram, that would close the circuit and should enable you to start your vehicle.

Looks like pin 5 and 3 on the relay will close the circuit. Try that first

Hey, Zach. I think your neutral safety switch sounds like a likely guess. Without a wiring diagram it’ll be tough to tell you exactly what wires go where but by checking wires one place at a time I think I may be able to help you. First, can you tell me how many terminals are on the starter relay? And do you have an automatic or a manual transmission?

Thanks for the response Travis! There is for terminals on the starter relay. It is an automatic transmission. Old Turkey posted a helpful wiring diagram with some things for me to check.

If it's a 4 terminal relay, it should be pretty straightforward. Two of the "plugs" that accept the terminals of the relay should have positive voltage, and the other two should terminate to ground. (Is there a little diagram on the side or bottom of the relay?) I'm assuming that since bypasses the relay, you aren't getting positive voltage to the coil side of the relay. If your neutral safety switch doesn't think you're in either park or neutral, it won't send power to the relay. The diagram posted shows the circuit, but not which pins on the switch need which values and in which gear. Look at the top of your transmission. You should see where the shifter cable attached to the gear selector on top of the transmission. The switch looks like this: https://www.partsgeek.com/mparts/neutral...

That style switch has a series of contacts that will have continuity in different gears. I've replaced that exact switch on several Toyotas that had intermittent starting issues. Because they're so expensive, I try to take them apart and clean the contacts first. I've had luck with getting them a Pull-A-Part if cleaning the contacts didn't work. To test it you'll need to jump two terminals on the connector and see if you can start the car. If the car starts, you'll know the switch is the problem. Old Turkey's post shows the yellow and black wires on the diagram, I'm not sure if those are the colors of the actual wires. I'll try to find which pins to jump across at the connector and get back to you.

Do you mean jumping the connector on the neutral safety switch itself? @travisjfox If so I will do that. If I find that is the problem, how hard is it to take a part and clean? And if that won’t work I am pretty sure I can find the same switch off a TC or similar Toyota vehicle at a scrap yard like you have.
