Can my power button be replaced?
The power button on my Surface Book is permanently depressed; it won’t “spring back”. So, I can’t power on my computer. Using a butter knife, I was able to pry open the bevel where the power and volume button sits, and am able to turn on my computer in this way. I chatted online with a Microsoft support person, then called support twice, then took the Book into a Microsoft Store, all with the same result - I need to pay $599 to receive a refurb tablet to replace the one with the broken power button. They would not even acknowledge the ridiculousness of spending $600 to fix a broken piece that costs about $.01. For now, I can turn the laptop on with the butter knife and a paper clip, but would prefer to replace the power button. I haven’t been able to find this piece or information about this looking elsewhere online. Suggestions?
Also, any suggestions about a consumer protection place where I could lodge a complaint against MS?

Jason, I am curious if you can send me more detailed instructions on how you were able to get to the power button. I have the same problem. Thanks!

I too just had the same issue this past week. Happened when I had to hold down the power and volume to restart the machine. Any updates? Mine is also randomly restarting while I am working on it.

The same here. The problem is that there is a tiny (tiny tiny!) flat printed wire running from that button. Due to the many on/off actions (and certainly some frustrating hard pushing when it doesn't turn on) the flat printed wire is not short-circuited anymore.
You can't repair it, I am at the point where I grinded open the surface Pro on the back, as to be able to reach the printed circuit. So indeed, with a butter knife or other metal piece, you can make the computer switch on. No way to install another button, too small.
I had to mil open my surface book due too, but for another reason. These fabulous computers (and they are) should come with a special 'replace' warranty for such stupid foolish 10 bucks costing problems, which, upon asking cost almost as much as a new machine...

Hi Johan, I have the same issue with MS Surface. I need to get it turned on one time in order to ensure I have everything (data) backed up or copied. How did you get the opening to access to the power button ?
