Why is my iPhone not charging and the volume buttons not working after

I just changed the battery of my 5c. Everything seems to work well except for:

1) the battery does not charge, although it shows the lightening symbol,

2) the volume buttons do not work.

3) I don’t think it matters but the phone was missing one of the two pentalobe screws (I bought it refurbished 2 years ago)

The phone was working fine before the battery change.

The only difficulty I run into while changing it was that the adhesive tapes broke and I had to use a hairdryer to loosen the battery.

I would very much appreciate any help since I am a rookie at ifixing!!!

This is my an update to my question. I used an Ifixit kit to replace battery. I checked the highlighted area in MInho's picture and everything looked ok. However, when a reconnected the battery, I noticed that the connector right beside it what was apparently loose (see arrow in picture). When I put the phone together again the battery showed 100% charged!? It stayed like that for a few minutes, then it restarted itself and showed 6% again. I plugged it and left it overnight, still 6%. I unplugged it and it went to 30%. I turned it off and on and it showed 100%, then int turned itself off. I pushed the power and home buttons together and it turned on showing 100%. That was 15 minutes ago and so far so good.

I have no idea what all this means. The volume buttons still don't work.

As Stu suggested, you could simply have a poor quality replacement battery. However, there is also a possibility that you accidentally dislodged a tiny component next to the battery connector. This is a common error with DIY fixes as the part can be gouged out with a fingernail while disconnecting the battery connector. Take a close look, preferably with magnification to see if anything is missing (see highlight in image below).

If that looks good, then consider contacting the battery supplier about a replacement unit.

If the highlighted component is in place, then try a battery.

Maria, did you use an offshore battery for the replacement? I replaced my battery with an offshore replacement and my iPhone was doing the craziest things after the replacement. It was so screwed up I ended up putting the original battery back in. This could be your problem.
