Philips UHD TV unclarified problem

Hi

I got this unfortunate situation where my not-2-year old Philips 49PUS6031/12 is having a problem.

The Standby LED blinks continously if I power it on. It shows the Philips logo, then the logo goes away for 15-20 seconds (backlight still on) before rebooting briefly and returning to standby mode (static red light).

If I press the Netflix button, it shows up the Netflix logo, loading and giving me a no internet error for a split second, before returning to standby mode.

If I during boot, hold down the “OK” button on the remote, it gives a “quicker” blinking LED, which I guess would be an error-code. But I have nothing to compare to.

The TV has a joypad on the back, which does not respond to any movement (press in should power on the TV, but doesn't).

I'm unsure what or where the problem is. I've googled for 2 straight days with various results, but nothing that gets me closer to a solution.

I've checked for bad caps, but the power board looks fine, which was my initial concern. Actually all boards looks perfectly fine. No burn marks, water damage or anything. But now I think it might be a software issue. Or perhaps a different problem? I cannot enter recovery mode or anything as the joypad doesn't respond to anything I do.

Does anyone, have any light to shed on this matter? Can I test the powerboard further to conclude that it is the culprit? Or is there a way to verify that the software or mainboard is or has become defective and needs replacement? Or is it even possible to fix without replacing any hardware?

Thank you!

I contacted the Philips Customer service, and they send me the files needed for a forced software update. Files which aren't for download on their website.

So the TV is fixed, with a simple software update.

I have the same problem. Do you still have the file for forced software update ? I can't find it anywhere, Philips Customer service is silent for my e-mail for a long time... Best regards.

If you still need it I still have it.

Best Regards

Dear friend!

Maybe You can help me with the file for forced software update?

Best Regards

I to could use these files. It makes me mad these are not easier to find. TV is stuck on loading screen. if you unplug and press power button for 30/s it tells you that firmware is corrupt .

Hi @y0ghurtsuit ,

Try a power refresh and see if that resolves the problem.

Disconnect the power from the TV, press and hold the TV power button for 30 seconds and then release. Reconnect the power and turn on the TV.

Have you also checked the manufacturer’s warranty, usually found in the user’s guide, to see if the warranty period is still valid? If it is still within the warranty period consult the warranty as to what to do to make a claim for a manufacturer’s warranty repair or replacement.

Showing the logo is a good sign.

It indicates that the display is working at least.

I’m wondering if the TV firmware has become corrupted and that after it starts it no longer knows what to do so it shuts down.

Here’s a link to the software upgrade page. If you view the installation instructions it details how to upgrade the software from a USB flashdrive.

I do not know if this will work because if you already have the latest version software installed, (and you can’t tell because the TV won’t turn on for you to find out) then it may not allow the re-installation of the same software version to occur, only later versions.

Please double check that I have linked the correct page, as installing the wrong software can “brick” the TV, rendering it useless.

Search for your TV exact model number software (or firmware) and see if you end up at the same location

Hi!

Thank you for the feedback.

I did try the power refresh which didn't do anything.

It should still be under warranty, but Philips in my country isn't known for “outstanding customer care” - I am in contact with them, but again, they are not much of a help.

My wonder is the same, that the firmware has been corrupted some how. If I only knew that the blinking LED would confirm that.

I would try to update the firmware, or somehow reinstall or reset. But the guides require me to “hold joypad down” which does not work. I don't know if it's the TV that won't register it, or the joypad itself is defective(unlikely?) or what the cause is..

Thanks again for your help

Hi @y0ghurtsuit ,

Hopefully we are looking at the same instructions

In the installation instructions Step.3 in doesn't mention anything about a joypad it says "Press MENU button, then press 1-5-0-5 digits sequentially on the remote control then choose YES on prompt displaying "Do you want to update software" - unless the remote control is known as a joypad that is ;-)

You should be able to download the firmware from the link to a PC, unzip it and then copy the file to the root directory of a flashdrive and then connect the flashdrive to the TV USB port etc.

I have seen on a few different brand TVs that the TV actually "looks" at the USB port when booting up. It looks for a specific file name so even if you have a USB installed it won't do anything about it unless the correct filename is on the drive. just some info for you.

Ah yes, sorry. The joypad "down" should be the "reset" method, my bad. But the TV won't react to any presses from the remote (to my knowledge) during the boot-up time, so remote control is basically out of the question, unless its for powering it up. I have triede alot of times, transferring the firmware to a USB drive and plugging it in, even triede different ports on the TV too.. But no dice.

But I know it reads the USB drive, as it created a folder named "DVR" at some point.

Here is a video of what happens with it. Hope it helps.

Hi @y0ghurtsuit ,

Did you locate the software file and installation help file on the internet or did you use the link I provided?

I just noticed that the link I provided said Slovenia - English at the top of the page and given the language shown on the screen in your YouTube video (Danish?) it may be that it is the wrong file as perhaps I was not on the correct "country" for Philips support. Just a thought. It may be that the firmware is country specific. This is just a guess but you never know. If you do find the Philips support page for your country and download the file you can check if it is also called "upgrade_mb120.bin"

Also did you ensure that the USB flashdrive was formatted in FAT32 and that there was nothing else on it besides the one .bin file?

Other than that I can only suggest that you push Philips to honour their warranty. Contact the manager of the service department and if he/she won't help, contact the manager of Philips in your country and express your disappointment at their "quality" product failing so soon with little warranty help from them
