PSP 2001 LCD Vertical grey bar growing

I purchased a silver PSP 2001 second hand as is. I have no knowledge of how it was treated. When I turn it on, everything functions, but on the far right had side of the screen there is a vertical grey bar maybe 1/16 of an inch thick. There are also a couple of vertical lines of duplicated pixels. The longer I have the console on, the more glitchy the screen becomes, and the wider the grey vertical line grows.

I have tried to disconnect the LCD, clean everything with alcohol, then put it back together, and there was no change whatsoever. If you think its an LCD issue, I just want to make sure it isn’t a motherboard issue, or something else that is fixable.

Thanks!

Update (12/20/2018)

Thank you so much for the response. I swapped the LCD with a different one and it worked just fine, so yes something must be wrong with the LCD. I’ll have to look closer at the ribbon cable. Is the cable sandwiched in there? Can you replace the ribbon cable?

Hi!

You cannot replace ribbon cables. The way they are built makes them very sensitive to damage. Those fine conductive lines are sandwiched between some layers of plastic, however, some lines are so tiny that you cannot see them. Small dents or bends of the plastic layer can break these lines.

Thanks good thought. I replaced the LCD with one off of another PSP and it worked just fine, so it is definitely something on the LCD. I know with Nintendo DS’s that the ribbon cable and the LCD are just a single unit. Is that the case with PSP’s?

Hi!

Try visually inspecting the LCD ribbon cable (the wide orange cable on the bottom of the panel). Does it have any dents or bends that might have broken the small conductive lines within? Does the port on the motherboard appear to be damaged? Are you sure you plugged the ribbon all the way in?

I would suggest you replace the screen, as this type of damage occurs after the system has been dropped.

You can get a new screen here (they are not very expensive).
