Swap SSD from early 2013

I have two MacBook Pro retina systems:

  • A1425 Late 2012 with a 128 GB SSD
  • A1425 Early 2013 with a 256 GB SSD

I assume that the 2013 SSD will go into the 2012 system is that true?

I have just tried swapping the SSD but the MacBook Pro does not boot up properly, do I need to do something to get the old SSD 2013 to work in the newer 2012 system?

Thanks

The problem can be solved by reinstalling the MacOS from Apple Recovery Menu. It looks like that SSD of yours has the settings of early 2013 model, which are conflicting with your late 2012 Mac. Yes, you’ll lose all your data (just do not forget to backup, or move to another drive, all important files, before reinstalling the OS), but you’ll have a normal working machine.

If you setup the OS installer USB Thumb drive you can re-install the OS and if needed upgrade the systems firmware. Basically you won't loose your data!

The wrinkle here is Apple has altered both the systems firmware and the drive format from High Sierra onwards so you can encounter issues moving the drives between the systems if the MacOS is not the same on both.

So to get around this you’ll want to setup a bootable OS installer with the OS you want to use How to create a bootable macOS Sierra installer drive (or newer) Using it you can re-install the OS.
