Input needed for Mac shutdown code 128

Hi,

My Mac has shut down a couple of times with shutdown code 128. I checked the following ifixit post though I am not sure if its a memory related issue since I never see code 112 and also don’t really see excessive memory activity in the Activity Monitor.

How to determine Mac shutdown causes

I am considering cleaning up inside the macbook pro once I confirm if its actually dusty and also do a hardware test if needed, as suggested in this thread:

Any suggestions?

Hi,

I did run the Mac diagnostic test which gives the following message.

”The battery will need to be replaced soon.

It is functioning normally, but holds less charge than it did when it was new.

Reference Code: PPT002”

Apple’s online support page basically gives the same advice:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203747

I called up Apple Customer care and they offered to get the battery replaced with an estimate of $129 + taxes.

Any thoughts/comments?

Thanks,

Sharath

Did anyone else face a similar issue and was it solved by simply replacing the battery?

What is the amount of RAM your logic board have as well as the size of your drive and how much free space it has?

A common issue I’ve seen is the runout of storage space on the drive! What happens here is your system needed more RAM space that it has physically so it leverages Virtual RAM on the drive. But, if the drive is overly full it can find its self hamstrung!

Ideally, you want 1/3 of the drive empty for 128/256 GB drives, And for larger drives 500 and larger 1/4 free.

Thanks for your input.

I have 16GB RAM, 500GB SSD, of which ~217GB is free. So I this is due to a lack of storage space.

BTW, both the RAM and SSD are factory defaults (no aftermarket updates have been done.)

@Sharath Raju - Lets see what diagnostics tells us. Restart your system and free the D key

Reference: Mac startup key combinations. Tell us if any errors popped.

Thanks Dan..I have been super-busy. I shall check out the diagnostics and respond back.
