re installing OSX problems
Does anyone know why its becoming nearly impossible to do fresh installs of OS-X on older Mac Systems.
I have had a collection of various versions of OS-X installs set up on USB sticks. Have been using them with no bother for the past 5 + years. In the last 6-12 months they have all stopped working.
When I try to re-burn them and use them the Mac system is saying the install has become corrupt.
The current issue is with a customers MacBook Pro, the 500GB mechanical HDD has died. Have fitted a 480GB SSD and tried using the internet recovery to install Mountain Lion.
After formatting the drive and starting the install i get a timer stating its going to take -2,393,938,938 and 8 minutes. After about 2mins it pops up saying Can’t download the additional components needed to install Mac OS-X. I have tried it with a standard mechanical HDD as well as the SSD.

I am having this problem as well.
I have erased the drive and indeed get the can't download additional components needed msg.
My question is how do I download the new os if I no longer have a functional MacBook Air (2011)
I can only book to utilities screen and we know the reinstall option will not work.
Pls help all I wanted was a fresh install to clear the machine.

I'm in the exact same boat as Chris Barlow. I have wiped the drive on my Mac mini and just want to install a fresh copy of Lion on it but I get the same error message. Even Apple can't (or won't) assist with this.

Also have this issue! I'm wondering if Apple stopped hosting the OS X software components...

Apple no longer supports older OS-X releases older than El Capitan and sometime this year that too will be retired.
The only way to install older OS-X releases (the OS that came with your Mac) is to create a bootable OS installer with the OS you want. As an example I just setup someone with Lion using a USB thumb drive after I altered the system date so the installer is fooled!
Review my answer below for all of the details!

Sorry Dan, altering the date via terminal was a lost of time. It didn't work for me . What did work was using a bootable usb.
In a friend's Mac, download the desired OS installer (High Sierra in my case for my MacBook Pro Late 2011 - google "How to Download a Full macOS High Sierra Installer App") and create the bootable USB, HDD or even SSD with Disk Creator (2 steps very friendly freeware tool - google "disk creator").
Just forget the internet recovery mode and don't bother with network certificate issues...
Hope you recover your machines!
