Is the harddisk dying?

I have had 2 I/O errors at this point, endless boot structure issues, permission issues, I seen a iMovie file disappear one time over a year ago, sometimes the computer will give me the spinning beachball frequently although this may be memory related too

At this point in time, I am about to consider this drive dead even tough SMART says it's fine, however, I do not fully trust it and if it is going, I will become a advocate for SSD domination, this is crazy how the HDD dies in a 3K dollar computer this fast

What is your opinion about this drive?

Sounds nasty to me. I'd run TechTools Pro on it. If you don't have that run the diagnostics program on your original installation disk. Make sure you have your User data backed up before starting anything like this. Or you may just have some bad blocks, so use Time Machine to back up and reformat the drive using the write zeros option install your new system and use migration assistant or Time Machine to get your old data back on.

lost those, but I have my snow leopard DVD when I got that

You need the diagnostics on that original disk. You can get one from Apple for $15.

email me

What else is crazy is SMART reporter says the drive is fine, clearly looks like it may be dying, SMART should be called DUMB at times like this and have seen client's drives die when SMART(oh wait, DUMB) says OK

How I know this is I have test software for PC, not mac, and the drives test OK but I advise a backup in case, and the drives die a few days after I test them(one client said it died a day after I checked it) OK, SMART is a joke in my opinion, but has it's place

I have exactly the same problem here (since august 2012). Two weeks ago I went to am apple store and they ran the test, they said everything was fine, probably a software error.

I made a clean install, the problem disappeared for a week, then, came back one week ago. So I went to the apple store today, they tried to run an online check up (which for some reasons didn't worked). By the description of the problem I gave them they thought the problem come from the hard drive.

Now I'm back home and in the "Disk Utility", the Hard Drive: "500,11 Go TOSHIBA" appears in Red with a message: "The disk has a problem and needs to be repaired".

Well, now I know what the problem is.
